Kruger Park long weekend

Hello All

Returned last night from a short weekend in Kruger National Park. Stayed in Letaba Camp at one of the camping sites.

We left on Friday morning at 0200 with a R1000 diesel in the tank, 4 children and off road trailer with all the camping stuff for the weekend, roof rack with rooftop tent and gas bottles on top.

Kruger remains one of my favourite spots in the world but the cost after reservations is getting a bit much. We had to pay R790 for conservation fees, a gas bottle should you have forgotten yours will set you back R610. A pie and a little chips is R39,00, Coke at R21.00 for a 2 litre.

BUT even at that cost it remains a wonderful place to be. Some photos attached.

As expected no hiccups, ran as smoothly as always. Only one complain, there was nowhere to put her in 4x4!!!! One spot overlooking the Olifants River there was a lot of sand at the view point, Lots of tracks where the lesser vehicles suffered to get up a little sandy incline. The Patrol did not even need high range 4x4, the Coopers just rolled up the incline with no effort at all.

Diesel stats:

Did 1540 km there and back with 198 litres of fuel. That is 7.7 km/l average. Keeping in mind the roof rack, off road trailer, and 6 people in the car, I am happy.

@ Jules

I borrowed my brothers Challenger off road trailer. Will post a photo of the camp setup.

I saw again that a off road trailer is not the ideal for my extended family. When I load the 6 chairs and 2 stretchers and 4 sleeping bag and the camping cot and the cooler boxes and ammo boxes and tents and gazebo than aal the suitcases must be carried in a frontrunner hold all. So if everything is not folded to the maximum aerodynamically dimensions, then I do not fit everything back again and a child holding the camping kettle on her lap for 500 km tends to get a little moody after a while.

I bought a Jurgens Palma LT with double axles about a year ago. Time and money being prohibitive to much effort being put into the caravan but after this weekend I am committed to finish the project in the Dec holiday. Up to now I have removed all inside the caravan, only the shell is left, I lifted the axles by 50 mm (not OME just good old Yskor) and fitted 14 inch rims and tyres. The inside is planned, so it will be a cross between an off road caravan, dirt road caravan and normal caravan.
