Patrol Loosing Power

Post by Patrol101 »

Hey Guys

I recently got a new 2nd hand patrol 4.8grx and everything seemed OK at first but after a while It started loosing power. The vehicle was last serviced on 189000km(major), my intial thoughts was it could be a blocked petrol filter, so i got a new one and after installing it everything was 100%. After about 2 tanks later it started doing it again. As the previous owner has changed the original main tank to a larger one i thought the tank may be rusted or something. I took the tank off, flushed it, checked the fuel pump, changed the fuel filter again and put everything back and still no luck. My next step it to get it serviced, I can only get an appointment for next week thursday at Nissan Middelburg. So for now I disconnected the battery to see if isnt maybe a computer fault that would reset overnight. I will check that tonight. Any thoughts what it may be?

As a matter of course just check your Air Filter too. Sounds more like a fuel issue though, (ie: mild fuel starvation possibly) . There are alot of guys here with TB48 motor im sure you'll get some valid advice shortly.

Also, use the "search" fuction on this site as there is possibly another case similar.

Here's one link. Click below.

Does this fancy new tank breath properly? When you have driven for a while, and you open the filler cap, is there a sucking sound?

I am not sure of the 4.8 Patrol, but I know that some fuel-injection cars use a pump fitted inside the tank. On some of these tanks, there is a small gauze pre-filter, and if that is blocked it could cause something like this?

On some systems, there are two pumps, a so-called "lift pump" in the tank, and a high-pressure pump outside the tank. In such a case, if the "lift pump" does not work, a similar problem could be caused?

It could also be a fuel pump problem, if the delivery pressure is too low these symptoms would result?

you could check the following:
1 fuel pressure
2 MAF (expensive, try and swop it out with a working 4.8 and test)
3 Oxygen sensors.
4 sucking false air in through the rubber inlet pipes.

:rolling: :rolling: :rolling: [raai wat 't ek gerook v'morre ?????]

Clean the MAf with ELECTRO CLEEN or Spanjaard's 'CARB CLEANER" [speak to me or oom Herrie if you not sure HOW..

Check the entire fuel line for 'knot' in the lines -- or a bit of dirt in it -- that 4.8 thinks with a computer .. the computer feels your pressure on the pedal, it tells the pump to deliver X-amount of fuel to the engine .. then, if anything in the way of that fuel flowing freely ... you have power loss .

Also - electro cleen the "drive by wire sensors" inside the accellarator pedal [the thing under de right foot that makes the 4.8 go Zoooommmmmm..]

Hi
Partrol101 i had the EXACT same problem on my 4.8 and she only has 100 000km on her.I would loose power, replace fuel filter and be 100% for a while.
Then it would start again after about two refuels,i empty and fill both my tanks.
The previous ownwer never used the sub tank so i guess over the years some rust had started in the tank and i would then pump it to my main tank and then get a blocked filter.SO with me it is an ongoing process of just filling up and replacing filters and i must say it has gotten a lot better, know only happens every 6-7 refill,
fuel filters are cheaper than having the stealers take out the tank and clean it :mytwocents:
