Navara 2.5dci and Auto box in GQ ??

What do you guys think about a Navara 2.5dci motor and Auto box in the GQ, provided its possible to mate the transfer case to the Auto box or replace the complete Engine, gearbox and transfer box with the Navara`s.

145Kw and 450 Nm is much better than what the current petrol 4.2 produces.

TD42 Engines are not available in the market so this might be an option.

My opinion, and this is only an opinion, is that this depends very much on what you want to use it for.

I would not even consider this for an overlanding vehicle, but if it is a daily driver and weekend plaything, go ahead.
I say this not because I beleive there is any inherent weakness or unreliability in the engine itself, but because of the electronics grafting that will be required to make this motor work, and because I beleive that for overlanding simpler systems are better as it is easier to find help.

I would certainly only do it if the motor could be made to fit on the existing gearbox, but this motor is a lot shorter so it shouldn't be a problem?

It is liable to be a lot more expensive though, and I personally would rather go for the normally aspirated TD42, but my car is an overlander.

I have managed to obtain quotes for imported TD42's in the past, and seeing as several municipalities are using the Patrol pickup now, it must be possible to find them?

Peter, I have contacted every importer in JHB and PTA and nobody have them. Some of the Cabstars also came out with the TD42ti but no luck finding a wrecked one.

Commercial Auto Parts in Shelby used to have them with a warranty but not anymore.

Why do you want to change? Is the 4.2 broken, or is the fuel consumption the problem?

Just remember the 2.5 is CRDI so you will need the wiring as well as the ecu for both gearbox and engine and most likely the key also as this uses NATS and you need the coded key

Any reason you specifically looking to use an AUTO box? If you don't mind Petrol I've been to the Lynx guys a couple times this year and have ALWAYS seen atleast one Patrol / Cruiser having a Lexus conversion. Seem to know their job well.

When those 145 KW engines pop they cost a fortune to get repaired. A mate of mine was quoted R115K to get his Navara's engine fixed. Unfortunately I do not have the detail of what went wrong except that I know that he drove it very hard and that his wife cotinued to drive it when the dredded red engine light came on. I would say that the particular engine was abused. The point is that they are exepensive to repair. :surprised:

PatrolNW, Phillip Bekker (forum name RAKA) has a 4.2 diesel motor for sale, send him a PM?

I drive a Troll and a Navara. Both diesels, and as much as I love both, I do not believe that the Navara engine will do the troll justice. The 2.5 performs well in the NAVARA and to date no problems. Fuel consumption is not 8,7 lt/100.

The Trolls as heavy and with the turbo lag the Navara has the gearbox is going to take a hammering.

Buy Raka'a 4.2 diesel and fit a turbo and intercooler. My Troll has the Safari system on and to date no issues. Rate power is 14o Kw and 430 Nm.
