Dastek unichip

Hi I recently bought a Patrol witch had a dastek unichip in. Soon I had trouble with the vehicle shuddering and performed totally as if there is no fuel. Took it to Bosch and the computer said straight away it was the MAF. After checking it out the were sure that it was not the problem but in fact the unichip. I had them remove the chip and all the problems were solved. Is this a common thing and can the chip be re-installed? Does these chips go faulty and if so can they be repaired?
Any ideas?
