Nissan Patrol 4x4 (Africa)

Hi, brand new to the site and relatively new to 4x4's. i hope that someone can help me with some information.

I have a 1996 4.2SGL patrol on a recent trip with a friend ( drives a hilux) I noticed that the front wheel hubs on my vehicle get extremely hot when in the locked position (can not touch them for long) . My friends hubs remain warm at best. Could this indicate a problem, and if so what sort of problems?

Howzit and Reagarding your hubs, when last have you serviced them?

What entails in this service, grease !!! Maybe his brakes were overheating !!

Howzit, I have had the vehicle for four years and have not serviced them, how often should you have them serviced? Regarding my brakes, a friend has suggested I get my brakes checked out as he thinks there could be a leak in the brake booster, reason being the vehicle brakes but is not as sharp as it should be. The thing is that it really only gets hot when the hubs are in locked position.

Regarding wheel hubs

My front wheel hubs were making a very load grating noise after reversing in 4x2, which would disappear after a couple of hundred meters with a load bang.

I found a site explaining how to convert them from auto hubs to manual hubs by removing a ring in the unit.
This seemed to to solve the noisy problem but now there is a grating noise with the hubs locked and I drive in 4x2, 4x4 seems fine.

I.m Worried about these hubs failing on me, so i have been looking for new hubs.

The dealers are are very expensive and have decided to purchase manual hubs as they seem to be stronger and cheaper.

I found these hubs on gumtree any idea if this would solve my problem ?

Be carefull when re greasing wheel bearings, if you don't know what grease was used before it is better to wash the old grease off completley and then re-pack the new grease on and into the roller's. If you mix incompatible greases they will actually cause damage to the bearings .I have seen this after only about 3 weeks it looked like the bearings had been in salt water for a month

Also replying to this thread - so they question i still have is "how hot, is too hot?"

Nissan did have my car before i left for moz and i did ask them to repack the bearings.

I know this is a very old thread, but I bet the overheating was caused by a locked break calipper piston, usual in Trolls...
Another common problem is free-wheel hub breakage. Best solution? Get a set of used manual Nissan hubs, take the guts out and insert them in a set of billet 4140 chromoli hubs by Superior engineering (Australia). Anything else -- and believe me I've broken everything there is (AVM, Superwinch, Nissan auto, Nissan manual, etc.) -- breaks, specially with large tires and petrol engines (more HP )
