Nissan Patrol 4x4 (Africa)

Hi Lads,

If one has to replace a Patrol clutch what are our options?

Nissan Original?
Nissan Heavy Duty ?
Aftermarket unit?

How much is Nissan asking for clutch kit? and,... do they carry these consumable items in their inventory locally?

My clutch is fine at the moment, but my box is out under warranty for some faults (can you believe it) , so im wondering if its necessary to replace the clutch at this stage or not. (the Nissan HD clutch i have has done about 90 000km , and feels amazing still...?

Advice on all the above would be greatly received.

I paid R5,483 for a new clutch kit. This included the installation. But because I was redoing the whole engine, the builder did not ask me for much labour on the clutch.
At the time if replacing, the car had done 200,000 km. Earlier than expected, but the first owner had the car for 180,000 km, and I don't know how he drove it.
My understanding is that this was not a Nissan original and I did not have it replaced by a Nissan service station as their mark-up could be much more. The aftermarket is not to difficult to acquire.

I understand diesel clutches have a shorter life (mine lasted 200,000), so 90,000 seems very premature for replacing it.

About Patrol's being problem free.............

My Troll has 378 k and has had it's second clutch fitted at 345k km. We removed it and found that the clutch wear material was ok, but the springs that reduce the shock loading, where worn out. I have fitted the new Nissan clutch, and what a job. Had a friend with his 80 series helping me and he could not believe the size and weight of the gear box.


Ja 90k km is poor.

That is one thing you can say about the Patrol gearbox, it is Industrial grade. Really heavy duty.
I won't claim that Patrol is more reliable than Cruiser. In fact it probably is not.
But it sure as heck is the toughest animal out there.

My 4.2 diesel's clutch was replaced on 265 000 km. Went for the standard Nissan clutch kit and I am stil happy with it 6 months later.

The old one did not slip, it just wasn't engaging smoothly any more and that made it difficult to modulate when negotiating obstacles. If my Patrol led a more sedate life, I would have just left it!

My clutch is fine, amazing actually, nothing wrong at all, the only reason why i would replace it is to avoid having to drop the box again and pay for labour, as this time the box and labour is covered my warranty.

@ Alex - Its all very well saying the patrol gearbox is industrial grade, and thats what i thought too, but then why am i in the process of replacing under warranty a whole bunch of parts (R30 000) PLUS the actual casing!!! (another R?? ) ... my guess is this fix replacemnt will come in at over R40/45 000.

One of the MAIN reasons i bought a patrol is because of the " Unbreakable" gearbox..... So much for that.

I dont even tow - EVER! At this stage im wondering why i bought it, seriously, could have the same troubles with a LC but at least there'll be parts in South Africa and people who know how to install them.



Anyhoo, just got a quote for replacement clutch - R5600. Sound reasonable? Its a genuine Nissan Unit.

Ps: I still DIG my Patrol. just really frustrated at this entire kak story of theirs now. In time i will get over it and enjoy driving it again.
