I would predict that the new Patrol would match the layout of the Land Cruiser 200 Series, i.e. it will retain body-on-frame construction and will still have a rear beam axle, but independent front suspension. It seems that the new Patrol (P61C?) will become a part of the Nissan F-Alpha platform family. The F-Alpha vehicles all have a separate chassis and the platform can accommodate smaller vehicles (such as the Navara and Pathfinder) as well as the big ones (Titan and Armada) and independent rear suspension (Pathfinder, Armada) as well as solid rear axles (Navara, Titan), but none have a solid front axle.

If this is correct it really will be the end of an era for the traditional Patrol layout and will also mean the end of this layout in any luxury wagon. The Defender, Gelaendewagen and Land Cruiser 70 Series will still soldier on with beam axles, but these are all quite a bit less comfortable (and I dare say safe, especially in the case of the Defender) than something like a Y61 Patrol or 105 Series Cruiser.

I wonder whether the new Defender would have better interior ergonomics than the current 90/110 and whether the crashworthiness has been improved (especially in a roll-over).

The new Defender pictured above doesn't do it for me. The flat windscreen is not very appealing and it seems the roof support from the side panels is minimal. Presumably it is still built from aluminium as well, but I suppose we would have to wait a while and actually see one or at least read a road-test from someone qualified to do so before making a qualified statement.

If you looked at the MK/MQ then the GQ and then the GU you would see stylistic hints of the previous generation. If that's the next Patrol I dont see any 'Patrol lineage' in that thing. Positive side is the resale value of the last solid axle patrols should be pretty good.
