Diff replacement

What do I have to do when I want to change the diff ratios on my 2006 4.8 GRX (3.545) to those from the 4.8 GL (4.375) or the 3.0TD GL (4.111)?
Is it just a case of taking the old one out and putting in the new one, or is there some modifications to be made? How dificult will it be?
I'm talking about the inside of the diffs, not the whole axle and diffs...

Hi Sias, I have no clue, but would be interested to hear your reasoning behind the need to change...

:yeahthat:
Also would like to know why?
My concerns would be the wear on your existing diffs - chances are good that you are going to have some noise issues and you have to replace both front and rear. The TCU is programmed for the OE setup and might have some issues. Personally I dont think it is worth the cost. :oldtimer:

Sias, exactly like you said. Only the ring and pinion if possible get the complete center and just bolt it in, make sure which ratio you want before hand. Front and rear must be same, noise wont be a issue if done right! :mytwocents:

If you come across some 4.3's you don't want let me know.

Chris and David - I had a conversion done on the car and the gearbox that came with the engine has different and longer gear ratios than the standard box had. Now I have much more power, but much longer ratios as well, so the two negate one another in a sense. If I can get 4.1 diffs or 4.3's my problem would be solved.
The question is: where do I get these? Does it have to be Nissan diffs, or are there aftermarket diffs that would fit. Would the diffs from an earlier 4.5 do the job?

I agree with G-Man on the complete centres.
Yes, I think the diffs from a GQ should fit on a GU GRX as they are also H233B's (33 splines). Only the GL and pickup have the bigger H260 diff (37 splines)

Not sure if I am blowing smoke here, but I thought the 4.8's have 260 diffs at the back?

Sias, I would think that diff center portions from a 4.8GL would be difficult to find, but there are a number of companies (mostly in OZ) that would be prepared to sell you brand-new crownwheel and pinion kits, even in special ratios. Euro 4x4 parts, roadrunner offroad etc?

Hi Sias look at this site and change yor transfer gears.

Wheels, it's not the transfer gears that are the problem - the gear ratios are too long. The transfer gears will only help when I engage 4X4. I want shorter ratios on the road to help keep the engine in it's powerband.
