Patrol Standard Rims

I still have the standard 16" steel rims on my 98 Patrol. I only baught the car recently and in the 2 occasions I have now taken it offroad I ran into the same problem. I encountered mud on both occasions, the last now being at Melkbos for the gathering. The rims has a groove behind the "spokes" which collects water and mud which does not get shed. I have a long term concern with this as it obviously is a good starting point for rust but the more frustrating result is that when that mud has dried and you get back on the black stuff to go home the wheel balancing is completely buggered. It felt like I was handeling a jack hammer going home Saturday afternoon. Sprayed it thuroughly out once home and handeling was back to normal. Is this something I have to live with using these rims or is there a cheat?

JW - get some "WINFLON" [or the teflon in a can of SPANJAARD] and spray the rims - especially those areas that collect the gagga guttrs - than, when you pick up speed again it just falls off. [in muggi-land sommer spray the headlights & windscreen - than then midges dont stick to the glass]
IF you put other rims on - NB NB NB - the centre portion MUST fit 100% on that centre ring - on most mag rims you have to take it in to be machined to fit[have a look at those on LOBO - we NEARLY ALMOST verdomp amper had a bad one on Sunday when one of the Trols on the route lost its front wheel - less than a KM after we downed a VERY steep decline - all 6 nuts had fallen out - because the rim did not seat properly [sorri Dawid - oompie skinner vanm jou]
