Gearbox Oil change

Post by Krippel6 »

Hi guys,

I just wanted to mention quickly what a difference changing my gearbox oil has made - I did it just over a week ago, I put in that GL4 castrol - forget what it's called. But yah, it took just over 3 liters of that stuff, and is now smooth as silk.

Yesterday I did a decent length trip (towed 2 bikes to redstar from honeydew) and the 4th gear doesn't even scratch anymore - I am VERY impressed, and am even more confident that the patrol will last forever!!!

I assume you used the Castrol BOT 130 M as recommended to you by Peter Connan (in this post)?

Chris, I tried the Castrol BOT 130M for a couple of weeks, but changed back to an EP90 oil about two weeks ago. The gear rattle on the td42 is a lot noisier with the 75w90 synthetic oil.

On how many km's is it advisable to change the gearbox oil?

I'd consider doing it anyway since the odo is reading 120k km.

Hi Traveler

I see the service manual says every 80 000 Km or 48 months.

You can check if the condition of the oil through the filler plug on the side of the gearbox. Open it and stick your finger in. The level should be 5mm below the opening and it should be nice and clear. Do not know if the previous owner did it so it might be good to check first.

Good luck.

I did mine a few weeks back with EP 90. What a difference !! If for preservation of the g/box.... then anytime is a good time to do a change!!
