Visiting a client out in Bryanston I saw this, together with 3 LC's driven by women...

What is up with Toyota and their blerry numbers on the LC's?! I don't know if they were 80, 105's what the heck

I agree with JG. The asking price is a bit high for a standard car, but the replacement value for the extras quoted is probably R50k or so? Mileage is low and if the service history is good and the usage hasn't been too rough, it might be a good one?

With regard to cruisers, the 80 looks very similar to this patrol. The 100 and 105 have the same bodies, see here (page 4) for pics of JG's car.

The difference between the 100 and 105 is that the one has a live axle between the front wheels and the other has double wishbone independent suspension. Which of the two you should buy (if any) depends on exactly how you use your 4x4. The live-axle one is full-time 4x4 and comes with diff locks everywhere.

The 70 (now called the 76) looks like the bakkie, but is a wagon with four doors, while the 78 (also known as the troopie) is a longer two-door wagon with a slightly raised roof. Both of these have live axles front and rear with leaf springs at the rear. In SA they are only available with N/A 4.2 diesel engines. Slow, robust, probably uncomfortable vehicles.

I visited them about 3 months ago, and looked at a white GRX. They originally indicated the Troll had 77k KM on it but later that afternoon called me to confirm that the Troll had 129 k km onit. The instrument cluster had been changed. I would be carefull.

For 300k you can get a much nicer Patrol, newer as well.

I popped to a Toyota Dealership yesterday, they had a 100 series LC.

Likes over a patrol

- I like that the second row middle has a chair not armrests.
- Is the boot wider?
- The split boot door like on a D3.
- Space in the engine bay for another battery.

I mentioned to the salesman I'm looking at Patrols too, he said NO comparison. "The LC has 3 difflocks and a Patrol only has rear not even centre (with emphasis)" - so I say be careful with them patrols rdl only!

Just bear in mind I am genuinely interested in both Patrols and LC's.
Anyways I got the reliability speech followed by spares all around Africa. I questioned the statement as surely the two cancel each other out...he was clearly annoyed. I asked what spares LC guys take or what would break he said, wheel bearings, belts and some other stuff. Now IF LC guys take these with why do they need "spares all around Africa"? I'm not making jokes here I'm serious. He thought I was being factitious. I HONESTLY want to know what breaks on them and why the spares around Africa statement is also selling feature. He looked too agro for me to question further. I asked what Toyota had in terms over overlanding, apart from Fortuners etc which I said are not even a consideration, I looked at a 70 series SW. At first glance WOW serious GC and angles comfort sadly no. It felt very uncomfortable on all the chairs.

I found a paper under the chair (100 LC) showing the price, it's a 2000 model with 170k km. I asked him the price he dropped 30k off the "hidden" page. He immediately said I'm not dropping further as I've spent money on it. I asked what, he mentioned valve stem seals, clutch and head. He made a valid point if the engine does not do "mileage" the rubber components pack up. It did surprise me though that at only 170k km a clutch was changed too?

This kinda makes me nervous for the 1st post vehicle, the low mileaged Patrol. Bear in mind I only plan on doing about 15k PA. Is the X vehicle going to break down?!

Do yourself a favour and see if you can get the LC and a Partrol lifted then compare the drive-trains

Ever wondered why the LC needs a center diff lock...

and with Stefan - Compared to LC how many Patrols have broken their diffs - you never hear about a Patrol
