Sell the Ranch! Let's All Move To Haiti!

Either that or we all set up a little colony in Papua New Guinea - it seems that Nissan still sells Patrols with the TD 42 donkeymotor in those markets. In fact, I was told that the Patrol is the preferred vehicle in Haiti.

I knew that Nissan still builds TD 42 crate engines, but I did not know that you can actually still order your very own TD 42-powered Patrol. I guess that when you really really really need reliability at the expense of minor details like "emissions" or "power" or "drivability," the old school diesel is the way to go.

We will so rule the Haitian rugby scene...

The Patrol with the TD42 motor is still available in countries like Zim, Zambia, Moz, Malawi, etc as a special import and is still the preferred mode of transport for many NGO's, EU organisations, govt dept's, etc. I was quoted US$ 89 000 for a brand new one at Inhambane Nissan last year in July! See p.92 of the latest SA 4X4 where somebody from Zim was complaining about his lazy '08 4.2 Patrol SW. I was just as surprised to learn that the n/a TD42 motors were still available. One would think that these motors should all do duty as cargo ship anchors by now !!!!! Jokes aside, I'm driving one of these myself and with only 125 000 k's on the clock, I better start doing a few trips to Kiev and back or else this vehicle is going to outlive me by at least a couple of decades!

Mine's a '98 with only 132,000km on the clock, of which 15,000km was added in the last 9 months, mostly on trips

I would actually prefer my patrol NA - it's still very slow with the turbo, so would rather just have the peace of mind (I am a natural fretter) that longevity is practically guaranteed.

Hi Guys

Dave I am not an expert, but have read most of this forum, and I can only remember seeing or hearing of two types of failure with the TD42 turbo motor:
1) Burnt holes in pistons due to excessive EGT's
2) Overheated engines.

I beleive if you have an engine monitoring system keeping an eye on those two factors, and warning you audibly if they exceed reasonable values, you probably have nothing to worry about? Having said that, there is nothing preventing you from removing the turbo stuff, since it was an aftermarket fitment and I am pretty sure they didn't change engine internals, but a call to alpine will tell you what they did?

Cheers

And what causes failures in the n/a TD 42 motor?

Good to know! Zim is probably closer to Kiev than is Haiti, and I could drive my TD 42 there, if it weren't for pesky problems like uprisings in Egypt and Somali pirates and whatnot. On the downside, I feel safer about the rugby in Haiti than in Zim. They might sent The Beast back and I am not 100% sure I want to scrum down against that dude.

Otherwise, feel free to drive up here!
