TD4.2T ever sold by Nissan SA officially?

Hi, will forum members please inform me whether Nissan had ever launched/sold the turbo version of the 4.2D Patrol S/W in South Africa? I'm specifically referring to the Y60/GR and Y61/GU models. One sees them every now and then but they all seem to have entered the country via our neighbouring countries or were aftermarket conversions done here locally. Am I wrong?

I stand to be corrected, but, The only Factory turbo diesel motor that has entered the country in a patrol was from late 2007/early 2008 in the Patrol Pickups, and is still optional to date.
The Td42 wagons in years gone by were only ever available in N/A configuration. And my investigation when looking at purchasing a patrol diesel for many years supports this as i only ever found that they were either N/A , or had been fitted with aftermarket turbo's (non - factory) .
In my opinion, steer clear of either purchasing one with an aftermarket turbo, or adding an aftermarket turbo . (this site, and many others, are littered with bad stories relating to this, regardless of what others tell you here or elsewhere, bad things eventually happen.

)
The only TD42 motor i would partially consider is a factory fitted one from Nissan as sold as standard, Not adapted.

The only bad thing about a turbo on a factory Nissan 4.2.The very little power gain from N/A to turbo.

Thanks guys, much appreciated.
Russ, I share your sentiments on this issue 100%. My information is that Nissan had always been very conservative in their approach to introduce the turbo to the 4.2D here in SA, for reasons related to reliability due to our topography and climate. Unlike Australia, we are blessed with many mountains, hence a much more conservative approach here. In Aus the 4.2D turbo versions produce 114 kW, here 90 kW max which is a very slight increase on the N/A's 85 kW as Frans had mentioned. Of course it is possible to get much more horses out of the N/A 4.2D, but at what cost? Shouldn't reliability be the number priority when venturing into the African bush?

Frans - Very true, not much increase at all. It would have been nice to see Nissan spec that turbo motor to around the 105kw mark, which , as you know, is well within the capabilities of that motor, and it would have also put it in competition with the cruiser's NA motor which is tuned as standard to about 96kw i think.
Gobi, very true - Reliability in the african bush = Very important
Reliability on a major highway or B road at night in south africa = The same, if not more important
Just remember , the NA motor will be a pain in the ass on hills, even small hills. Passing big trucks and cars requires timing, and, its nowhere near as smooth and refined-a-vehicle as the 4.5/ 4.8. Its got that big truck gearbox with the traditional rumble and grind (specially if you put a Nissan heavy duty clutch in), but, at the end of the day, its one of the best vehicles you can own.

Hi Guys
Judging by your comments and concerns made here it seems to me that I am then in a very fortunate position to have found a 4.2 Nissan motor factory standard turbo'ed model. When me and Frans did my conversion we found even the crankshaft in my motor to be considerably bigger than his - and with my rear main seal that packed up last year I also found it to be true.
The first rear main seal I got from Dubai ended up to be the wrong one - with an ID of only 85mm (this is for the N/A engin) compared to the right one I got from Australia for my turbo'ed engine which had an ID of 96mm. Quite a difference. And I must say there is also quite a power difference even between this engine and the turbo'ed engines in our Patrol Pick Ups - especially going uphill with a trailer in tow - ask Frans he was witness to it 2 weekends ago when we went camping at 22 watervalle. It was also 30+ degrees and no problems with overheating.
Anycase - just some useless info.
All I can say is I LOVE MY PATROL and would not easily consider selling it.
Regards

Hi Pieter
Your info regarding the differences between your TD 4.2 and the one Frans had, is indeed very interesting and anything but useless! I would like to believe that there has to be some minor differences ( bigger/stronger components? ) between the TD 4.2's imported into Aus fitted with turbo's and those N/A 4.2's imported into this country. Is it possible that we are dealing with slightly different TD 4.2's...... those which are suitable for turbo charging and those which are uhmm......not so suitable for turbo charging?
Just a thought, but if this is indeed the case, you've probably hit the jackpot Pieter......and keep on believing this until some asshole comes around and pop your bubble!!!
Happy patrolling

My Mrs just gave me the new Max Ellery workshop manual for my birthday,l for all patrol from 1998 - 2009 . I'll check up on what significant differences there are between the TD42 and TD42T motors, and report back if i find anything.

SA motors may be rated as less powerful than aussie motors because horsepower may be rated differently there.
In 1971 in the US, the society of automotive engineers changed the way they rated factory horsepower, so engines "lost" something like 30% of their horsepower literally overnight.
