Nissan Patrol 4x4 (Africa)

Has anyone made a dropdown table for the rear door.Any info will be appreciated as I am going to start building one today.Im getting tired of finding somewhere to put my beer.

If so.

What material did you use.( I think I will go for a thin gauge Stainless Steel with bent edges for strength)
Did you have to reinforce the rear door to hold the table weight.
Any problems you had while fitting it.
What type of latch did you use, something that is not going to rattle and drive me mad.

I have decided to go with the stainless steel , I should complete it before the end of the week. So far has cost about R130 with all the stainless fittings, bolts and braided wire.I have decided to strengthen the back board as this seems very weak and already had some breaks in it from someone trying to force a full boot closed.Am using some thin 0.7mm plate to try keep the same look while giving it some strength.

You can see the cracks in the hardboard so I decided to reinforce this first.



I use a 0.70mm Duralium which I had at home and cut a template from the back door. I didnt feel like drilling all the holes as there are 13 out so I made it just smaller than the actual hardboard.By doing this I just had to drill out the centre hole.



I then stuck the aluminium to the hardboard using Genkem.



For the table I went for a stainless steel top with the edges bent and double folded, I dont know the technical term for this I think 'lipped' but I found this top at work so I never had to get anything bent.The only thing is that it was scratched so I will cover it with something, maybe marine carpeting.



I drilled all the holes making sure everything lined up.



Especially seeing that I would be drilling into the back door.







Once the bottom hinges were lined up and bolts put in I started with the stainless steel braided wire, I think it was 1.5mm.I was going to use fishing trace wire but it did not look as nice as the thicker braided wire.



The table is hanging and seems fine I must just level it and crimp the last ferrels, then find a latch that suits it.



Everything I used was stainless steel, the only problem was with the hinges. Because there were two hinges you can see they are not perfectly lined up as there are a number of holes in the back door. I would suggest to anyone making a table to go for a full piano hinge as this gives you more options on where you can drill in the back door.The table size was also a little too big at 80cm x 40cm, I would maybe suggest 70cm x 40cm, but then again you can see the snug fit in the next picture.
