Nissan Patrol 4x4 (Africa)

Good day fellow forum members,

We are planning a road trip from Benoni Gauteng to the tip of Cape Agulhas.

For now the plan is go through Lesotho and make our way towards Coffee bay, from here the wild coast is unknow to me up until the Tsitsikama. From here we would appreciate those well travelled to the area to share where those hidden beauties are and the must see coastal towns are located. We are want to travel on mostly gravel roads along the way, have also not decided if we will be camping at all, but if this is a must plans can be changed. We plan to travel roughly 2-3weeks from around the 18th of December, yes we know roads will be crazy hence why we want to travel on roads not suitable for the "groot trek" to the coast.

We thank you in advance for any insight or suggestion to fill up our road trip.

It's not really possible to travel along the coast due to the rivers in the area. Thus you basically travel along the main tar road and make detours to the coast.

I have only made two such incursions, one to Dweza and the other to the Morgan's Bay area. Both were wonderful. In Morgan's Bay we stayed at the Yellowwood Forest campsite, and I can highly recommend it, but also look at Double Mouth.

Ek het gehoop daar is dalk n skelm "overland" of 4x4 route wat ons kan aanpak terwyl ons die kus afry.

You can travel more or less parallell to the coast on gravel, but mostly you'll be far enough not to see the ocean. So there is an alternative to driving the N2. If you're after an adventure and not speed, this would be the way to go. The Slingsby map of the Wildcoast is a good resource. After you cross the Great Kei River by "pont" boat, it's no longer possible to travel parallell to the coast, except up to Double Mouth via Morgan Bay. It's a fun route. There aren't many petrol stations on this route, so plan your fuel ITIN.

Coffee Bay in mu pinion is not worth it, but go see for yourself. Sadly the wildcoast is becoming incereasingly more risky to visit (just today there is another article on a kidnapping towards Umngazi Article here ), and given that even Mazeppa Bay closed down, I think the time to see this part of the world is now rather than later. They are also tarring more roads. So again, now is the time to see it. Summer is rain season; the roads are notorious,, so come prepared.

Don't know where you are coming from Lesotho, but avoid Umtata & Port St Johns.

Search on YT on the Ironman channel, they have done a wild coast tour a year or two ago where the gave the GPS co-ordinates of where they stayed.
