Nissan Patrol 4x4 (Africa)

Hi,

I need advice and help with a Nissan Patrol Gearbox.

In 2018 my Patrol radiator broke and pushed water into the Gearbox. We flushed the Gearbox a couple of times and during every year’s service including 2024 we kept flushing the Gearbox and filled it with new oil just to be sure. No problems from 2018 until now.

It seems the Gearbox has now broken for good. Vehicle does not drive. Goes into Gear but when driving it for couple of meters it does not go forward anymore and then the engine just revs.

New Gearbox at Nissan – R120 000 ☹

Can these Gearboxes be effectively and reliably repaired? Are there companies in SA that specializes on these gearboxes and have done successful repairs for other Patrol owners? Please give contact details.

Will the better option be to bite the bullet and buy a new Gearbox? Want to keep the vehicle as it has not given me any problems since 2013 except for the radiator fail.

I am not a fan of the design that a radiator fail can damage the Gearbox. Can the gearbox oil cooler be installed outside of the radiator? Has someone done this before?

Who diagnosed the condition of the gearbox? was it a nissan dealership or a "gearbox repair centre".
I would not go the Nissan route. Rather source a good second hand unit from David in Bela-bela. (zero83 4double9 15double8)
(most of the guys are on the river trip this wekend (including Dawid), so wil not be able to comment until next week.)

Check the gearbox relay first. It is on the passenger side in the engine bay.
If I remember correctly the reverse light relay is the same. Swap them and see if it makes any difference.

Have not taken it to anyone yet. Was 5km from my house so managed to crawl back.

Tried the relay change. Almost got exited as it reversed nicely out of the garage, but in D it is still limping and noice coming from the gearbox.

More advice needed please
