Value of a 1998 4.5l Patrol GRX with over 400 000km

Hi, everyone!

I’m on the market for a Patrol, but only if the right one at the right price comes along. Otherwise, I’ll have to “settle” for a Pajero. :)

I’ve recently test-driven a 1998 4.5e (the fuel injection model) GRX with around 410 000km on the clock. It's a donkey, but I'm looking for reliability rather than speed.

The current owner has had it for less than a year, but he has done plenty of maintenance, replacing the battery, both front wheel bearings and the starter motor and overhauling the clutch and cooling system. Most of this has been done at a Nissan dealership, and he has invoices he's willing to surrender as proof. In addition, the car has been driven for around 4000km before its last (major) service.

Still, there are at least two important things to be done: one is replacing the oil and oil filter and the other is sorting out the flashing airbag light on the dashboard (supposedly, the airbags have not been deployed). If I recall correctly, both jobs were quoted at about R7000-8000, the owner says.

I’ve taken along a friend who’s a mechanic and he felt the car to be fine mechanically, but didn’t want to vouch for it 100%, given the extensive work that had been done on it. He noticed a smidge of oil in the engine bay, but didn’t think there were leaks. Looking under the car, all seemed in great condition.
The body has some scratches, but no major dents. Other than that, the paintwork is in fair condition, although some panels have been resprayed. To my untrained eye, it appears to have been professionally done.

4x4 high and low range are working and so are the rear and front diff locks. The same goes for the air con and sunroof.

There are some signs of mild wear and tear inside, mainly on the door side of the driver’s seat, where the seams are coming loose. The same is starting to happen to one of the passenger seats. Still, nothing major.

The following extras are included: OME suspension with a small lift, steel front bumper, snorkel and a roof rack with two lights mounted at the front and one at the back (all of which are working).

The tires may have about 30-50 000km left in them, but I’m not the best judge of that. In any case, they are larger than standard, as the vehicle was used by one of the previous owners for towing. So, I would likely replace them to reduce noise when driving and hopefully improve fuel consumption, which currently stands at about 22l per 100km in town and 17-18l on the open road. The roof rack and the bumper don't help, but I would probably remove the former as well.

So, what do you think would be a fair price for this vehicle in today's market? I’ve included a few photos to make it easier to judge.

Good selling price (for buyer) would be 80-100k...

Welcome to the forum Marcio

I should know that car as it has one of my bash-plates on, but can't recall it right now.

Just a couple of notes:
1) It didn't come from the factory with a front locker. So if it has one now, that's an extra, and quite an expensive one to boot. I don't know what you intend doing with the car, but it does turn the Patrol into a 4x4 comparable to anything on the market. There is no way any Pajero (with it's factory front suspension) will ever keep up in technical terrain with a twin-locked Patrol. Just no way at all.
2) You won't get much improvement in fuel consumption from the quoted figures. The consumption is written on the back door, and that's pretty much what it is. But those tires are very good and not cheap, and you may be able to find somebody to swop you for a lesser AT-style tire and pay some money as well. However, I would strongly recommend keeping them if you are expecting to tackle tough terrain.
3) There's no way an oil change should cost that much. It's an easy 10-minute job and you don't even need to jack the car up. I would strongly recommend doing it yourself, it's really not difficult at all. Failing that, at least use one of the excellent mechanics on the forum rather than Nissan. Whoever you use, make sure they also grease all the steering ball joints and the six grease nipples on the driveline at the same time.

I second what Peter has said above. Unfortunately I don't really know prices so can't guide you on that.

Regarding the oil and airbag light. I see you are in JHB, maybe give Anthony a call. (079 four99 769two) He is an excellent Patrol mechanic and could give advice on causes and price to do the work.

I was surprised to see the front lockers, because I knew from reading this forum that they were not standard. The car will be used for, well, everything: overlanding, 4x4 trails (I want to improve my skills, as I've only driven a 4x4 for 9 months or so), weekend getaways and... commuting in town.

I don't see the Pajeros as equivalent and I do agree that, capable as they are, they cannot compete on the technical-terrain front, but they still make more sense for driving in the city. Unfortunately, I've fallen in love with the Patrol. Now it's just a matter of talking my wife into it, if she can look past the fuel bill. She's the sensible one, so I'm not sure I'll pull it off. :pray:

The quoted figure also included sorting the flashing airbag light, which probably accounts for the lion's share of that expense, or so I believe.

By the way, any thoughts on a fair price from your side?

Sorry to chip in.

I agree with Peter and Gareth, service is not nearly that much.
It would be worth doing the airbag reset procedure and see if it stays off or should there be a problem it will come back on. It an easy process, its on the forum also.

Might also be worth checking on Nissans website, you put the vin in there and it will tell you if it forms part of the recent Takata airbag recall.

I noticed you mentioned you were "surprised to see the front lockers" sorry to ask like this but if i my ask why do you refer to it as lockers instead of just a front locker and how/where did you see them?

Do you know what brand front locker is installed. Does it have a button on the dash to engage/activate the locker?

It's the first time I've heard of that recall. The info you (and other members) provide is invaluable!

No worries, I'm completely new to lockers, as my previous 4x4 was a Jimny, which doesn't have any. So, I may well be making a very silly mistake here. :lol: Please find below a photo I found online that matches pretty closely what I saw on the front wheel hubs, which led me to believe the car had an aftermarket front locker.

What I was "surprised to see" was precisely the hub lockers like those in the photo. From what I understand, which is admittedly next to nothing, the front hubs have a lock function, which I was confusing with the diff lock proper in my first post. I used the plural form because this lock function is on both hubs, but I see know it's used in the singular. :doh: When going under the car, I have to admit I just searched for oil leaks and checked the state of the driveshaft, so I didn't even notice the diff lock.

Like SJC suggested, there was a button for the diff locks. In addition, I had to reverse a bit for them to, well, lock. When I went back into 2WD, I believe the locks automatically disengaged, but I'm unfamiliar with the process (it was my first time using diff locks), so this may be a stupid misconception on my end.

If there's anything I've misrepresented, please free to call me out. I'm pretty ignorant about this matter, so I would appreciate your input.
