According to this dude, a diesel pump shoots fuel directly into the cylinders without the aid of injectors.

At first I thought the problem might be in the nomenclature of the parts, as we were speaking Russian. But when I asked for clarification, the mechanic really was convinced that no diesel engine has "injectors," as the term is used in Russian or in English.

Anyway, Ricster, sorry if I am hijacking your thread.
I think I spotted the issue with my mechanical acquaintance: I looked through my Russian Patrol manuals last night, and they showed "forsuni" (Форсуны) and not "injectors" in diesel engines. Petrol engines use "injectors" (инжекторы).

Clear as mud?

   Well done.
I am Happy for you :salute:

Spark the maiden up and keep the enjine going at just over idle speed with your foot on the throttle until the motor clear.Do not bother to much to bleed any air out,the enjine can run and will clear after a short while.

Well done again  :salute:

I have a silly question.... Ive got a duel battery system in the Maiden. The battery went flat after shhhhh loads of trying to start. Does that mean now that both batteries are flat? Can I use jumper cables from the auxillary battery ( if its not flat) to the main battery? I'm a bit unsure how this system works.

Thanks Oom mac... ek gaan baai fun he in die Maiden.... as soon as the wheels are rolling !!!

Well done Cedric!

What type of Dual battery setup do you have? Most systems connect the 2 batteries only for charging purposes and isolate them from one another to prevent the starting battery being drained by fridges etc. On most systems AFAIK (As Far As I Know) there is a mechanism to force the 2 batteries to connect in case you need it such as winching, or to start. Mine has a marine switch in the eninge bay that you have to turn, the NL systems have 2 buttons on the Battery monitor that you have to press together and hold for a second or 2(I think it's called 'winch override' or something)

Hmmm .... now you asking a good question Stefan. I'm not sure. I'll have a look in the morning. I do know there is a little green box, mounted on the fire wall in the engine bay. There are three terminals where the alternator, aux battery and main battery connects to. I don't recall any switches, but I haven't looked too closely at it. I'll do some homework on it and get back to you.

But on a lighter happier note..... The Iron Maiden Is up and running !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jump started on Friday evening, but the motor sounded as rough as a camels rear end.... not that I would know what a camels rear end felt like.... :rolling: .... and yet again in a bit of a panic.... whipped out the old cell phone and phoned Frans....

When I assembled the motor, I never set the injector pump timing, as I don't have all the clock gauges etc to do this.... and thinking.... or lack thereof.... that if I set it somewhere in the middle....I should be close. I was clearly way off track with that one. So, I listened intently to what Dr Frans had to say, and got my no 14 and no 12 spanner and prepared myself for a little more spanner rash. My hands and forearms look like I've had 10 vultures using my forearm as a perch.

After taking out the vacuum pump under the injector pump to get to one %*#@ bolt and loosening the other two on top of the pump I moved the injector pump to a more advanced timing, as I think I had the timing far too late and was getting loads of white smoke through the exhaust as well. I tightened everything up refitted the vacuum pump, and eagerly jumped into the drivers seat to crank that sucker up!!!....Without a cough or a splutter the motor jumped to life... still a little rough.... but now only as rough as a rabbits ass ....oops I mean donkey.... :rolling: . The motor when cold like I said is a little rough, but when warn is much smoother, but not yet perfect. I think what I should try is to loosed the injector pump...hmmm .. and the damn vacuume pump too, but reconnect it once the injector pump bolt is loose. Then start the Maiden and play with the timing on the pump to see if I can get it better, until I can get it to someone who can do the timing properly for me.

I must say that I have a huge sense of achievement, but none of this would have been possible if it was not for the comfort in the back of my mind that if I have a problem, there are people here on this forum that are willing to help and assist, even the words of encouragement, were HUGELY appreciated !!! ... so to everyone here ...THANK YOU !!! ... Frans ..... Thanks for allowing me to phone you ... especially so late in the night !!!.... I hope you got your roof rack on...

Well tomorrow I'm meeting friends of ours that stay at the Vaal Dam to discuss final arrangements for our trip to Mozambique on Wednesday evening ..... should be a nice run in drive for the maiden. then the big run in drive to Ponta Da Ora. Hold thumbs guys....

As soon as I get back I'll do a little thing on the rebuild with a few pics.

Again ....THANK YOU !!
