Dankie Jules en Jorrie
FOr whoever it may assist in future: the drive gear on the distributor is retained by a dowel pin. Do not try and drift it out. It has ben set-up (made bigger) on both ends. The pin is 4mm, and you will need to drill it out, or drill off one of the heads before you can drift it out.

Re: GQ options
Right, the 4.5 engine is in, with new clutch, pressure plate, spigot shaft bush and release bearing.
Interesting thing, the clutch plate on the clutch that came with the 4.5 motor was worn about 1mm thinner than the new clutch (presumably it has done about 190k km), while the clutch that came out of my car was worn less than half of that.
Anyway, the engine mounts are in (I used mounts for a 4.5, the exhaust-side bracket of a 4.5 and the inlet-side bracket from the 4.2. The mountings are not exactly the same, the mounting holes and pins are all in the same places, but there is a mechanism to prevent the engine from moving too far if the engine mounts fail, and this is different. The new-type mounts do not fit on the old-type bracket on the exhaust side for this reason, but I kept the 4.2's bracket on the inlet side as it is just a little bit stronger. The 4.2's starter is in place. The starters are not the same, but apart from the electrical plug from the switch, they do appear to be interchangeable. The 4.2's exhaust manifold is in place (except that I seem to have lost seven nuts) and the exhaust is bolted to the manifold.
The 4.2's air-con compressor is on and connected (all the brackets here as well as the pulleys, tensioners etc. appear identical), I used the 4.5's steering pump as the 4.2's has leaked oil for as long as I have owned it. The viscous and fan from the 4.2 is on as the 4.5 came without a fan blade.
I still have to fiddle a bit with the dizzy before that goes on, and the intake manifold adaptor should be complete by next weekend, then it's a matter of connecting all the various pipes and wires...
Man I really miss my car!
