To revive an old post...

What consideration should be given to gearing and speedo correction / calibration when changing from 33” to 35”.

Aussies suggest changes to gearing etc if you go up to 35?

Both my Patrols run 4.3 gears- tb48 & td42t & both are on 35" tyres... speedo is about 3% out.

Would you agree with Michael’s estimate of a 10% loss of power?

Has anyone done a fuel consumption comparison between running 33’s and 35’s?

Would one need to consider beefing up side shafts going to the bigger tyre size?

You will always lose a bit of power to turn bigger wheels, but you will also drop your revs at 120km/h so its a compromise, my consumption has stayed the same.

I'd say 10% is probably an accurate estimate.

The Patrol axels are plenty strong, I wouldn't be too concerned about that.

Gary, on a 4.8 it will feel like more horses will be down the drain with 35's as the maximum power and torque is higher up the rev range where on the diesels its very low down.

JP's got some serious power on his 4.8 turbo, so its not as noticable on his vehicle.

Tommy Watkins had 35's on his 4.8 auto, but was not happy about the power loss. Aparantly when loaded he really had to give it beans to maintain 120km/h up hills, but he will be able to give you more info on that

On my 2.7TD Sani, I went from 29s to 33s, and sucked my power for road use. Turbo boosts on average 0.3bar higher to maintain the usual speed. Offroad I'm not worried because of the selectable 2:1 or 4:1 low ranges. But mine is a pig to drive anyways, so I'm not trying to be a speed freak and will be testing the 35s on it as soon as the budget allows. Just because I live in a sandpit, and unless you want to use heaps of momentum, we run around the farm at 0.6bar to maybe 1bar to get good flotation. So I believe I will still score capability on 35s.

Besides, my wife said the Sani looks funny with the little 33s, and I'm not going to fight with her. Now I just need to build her a set of steps to get into the darn thing.

lots of guys are running 35 with their 4.8 but they change diffs to 411 it works great
