Dale,
Feel sorry for you chap!
The 4.2 and reliabilty...
Well, I bought mine in Dec and overheated it in Feb (long story... check my post under "Jasper" if you like). Turned out, daai enjin is so hard soos 'n klip!
Since done 2,500km problem free. Dankbaar...
Good luck with the decision. O ja, I also get about 120km/h @ 2600rpm (dis nou op die gelykpad

- NA you see). It's a lovely cruising vehicle, but very much a momentum car. 'n Lorrie neuk mens maar lekker rond. I find that from 1-3 I need nothing more. It's 80-120km/h that I miss a bit of grunt. But, the engine really feels just properly run-in at 290,000km+, maybe also a perception, but it runs like a truck! So, reliability is what you will get, and more forgiveness when things go wrong (like a burst water pipe).
My
Christoph

Some feedback to this. I decided I had to get my Patrol running again so dug in to fix as the td42 was more than I wanted to spend at the moment. Pulled the head only to find a cracked piston. So pulled the motor, replaced pistons and rings, redid head which was fortunately not cracked. Just got it all together and running the weekend. Now to bed the new rings, and see how things play out.
I'm getting quite proficient at working on these ZD30's.

Cool man do you think the piston was the problem all along?

Why did it crack in the first place? Fueling?

Piston cracking is caused by high EGT, no question.
The history on the vehicle is pretty simple. When I bought her she was overheating for nothing, Radiator was blocked pretty solid. I sorted that but probably too little too late and shortly thereafter had to do the head. About a year ago, after the head I lost a turbo in Mozambique. Drove home no turbo but that causes very high EGT for rather long periods.
So I guess that caused the piston to crack and the head gasket. So the head gasket was a blessing in disguise as I would otherwise have driven it to explosion and had much more damage. Piston crack was minor and the beginnings of bigger things to have come very quickly.

Dale, considering all the facts, its going to still be a relatively economical rebuild as it wasn't a catastrophic failure, and now you can put new pistons rings and bearings and Genuine Nissan Head gasket and you will basically have a brand new motor, that you know will be as reliable as almost a TD42, that can run on 500ppm diesel anywhere on the continent. I assume you have done all the NADS stuff already?

Good news Dale, this was by far the cheaper option to get your Patrol running again

Thanks guys. Yes, have full NADS. Dawes, egt, 3" exhaust, egr removed not just blocked, needle valve, steel tipped glow plugs...
Not the glow plug timer but will one day.
Ricster, I have put new rings, pistons, and Nissan head gasket now.

Dale,
How did you remove the egr, did you replace the injectors, and what is the cost breakdown with parts etc.? (Also include where you purchased the parts) I'm looking at replacing the glow plugs and refurbishing/replacing the injectors on my DT
