When we went up Baboon's Pass I was the first to have a mishap on the up - Broke the steel inflation valve clean off the rim ... We had to put the spare on.
Then, on the route, TWO steel rims got bent out of proportions and none of the mag rims gave any trouble [except for some "skuurmerke" [but if yo drive Baboons and expect NOT to pick up scrapes and scratches & dents and nicks to your rims, go find Alice ,,, you'll find her in Wonderland ]
I sold my steels, only have mags, even on the trailer and the caravan .. and thus far I've been Blessed [if you dunno what that means, you can call it "lucky"]

But now for example the Pro Whites are they strong?, will they take a little pounding? I mean after all our Patrols aren't exacltly light, and a lot of strain is placed on those rims aspecially when axle twisting on 2 wheels with possible side forces involved.

Any recommendations on which rims to get, where to get and roughly the cost of a rim. Someone is advertising 5 x 15" Maxxi's 33" for R 5500, but I'll need to get 5 rims. I'd be happy to get 2nd hand ones too as I want to make them black/gunmetal grey. All help welcomed !!! But there is a cost factor.... is it worth going this route.....
The other alternative is to sell my 16" Bridgestone duellers with 85-90% tread left and spend R 8k and put 4 x KL71's on the alloys I have at present. Maybe even buy a spare steel rim and put a KL 71 on there too, with the money I get from selling the Duellers.......

The Iron Maiden has some very nice Lenzo shoes(mags) on at the moment and it would be a pain in the donkey to jack up and swap 4 tyres everytime I want to 4x4......

IMHO the pro-white wheels are of a very bad design, the same design that Nissan used on the Y60 (although they are made from thicker steel). The web is basically a nearly-flat plate which is welded into the ring onto which the tire is fitted, somewhere near the middle. When the wheel carries a load, the metal of the rim flexes all the time, and eventually the ring will crack right there where the web is welded on. This can lead to sudden tire deflation (like a blow-out) which can be flipping scary.

JG in the army i was in (not to be confused with the one you were in, because when you were there there was still a war on) it seemed as if most such decisions were made purely on basis of purchase price.

Peter... you mentioned in an earlier post that the Nissan OME Y61 steel rims were better if I recall correctly, or were these ones also replaced under an extra warranty by Nissan?

What are the feelings on the standard Y61 steel rims, but then again if I go that route, the rims are 16". Therefore the tyres will cost the same as would be if I fitted them on my existing 16" rims. So the R300 saving per tyre if I bought 15" would not really be any advantage.... actually more of a shlepp to swap 4 tyres/rims everytime I went 4x4ing. ..... I seem to be asking and answering my own questions.....ha ha

The rim design on the Y61 is miles better, and as far as I am aware is not subject to problems.

I guess the real answer (if you can afford it) is to have to complete sets of wheels, or to just use one set all the time, which is why I have A/T's on my car even though I really would like a set of M/T's.

Damn right.... just dont know if i have the heart to risk damage to my Patrol there!! I'd much rather drive a friends 4x4.... or maybe rather an enemies?

Any takers on a trip [10 days or so) to Lesotho ? [MAIN AIM - to drive Baboon's - but the others can stay at camp and prepare nice "skaap oppi spit" for our return feast ???

Oom Mac I would definately like to do it, just not sure where I can scratch out that much leave except in December. In our industry we are forced to take almost all our leave in December.

I have the same thing with leave....but can manage a few days here and there during the year.

Speaking of Lesotho (and off topic.... ) The Nissan4x4 club has a trip up into Lesotho from the 16th June to 19th June. Just need to take one days leave. I'm going !!!...... There is still accomodation available if anyone wants to go. Its not a 4x4, over obstacles, through dongas etc. more a fantastic cruise through snow and maybe a few hours of play at a quarry somewhere in the area. So 4x4 experience is not essential. PM me and I'll forward you the details I have on this.

PS..... ordered the KL71's.....should be fitted tomorrow !!!!!!!
