Was it only the ST that was the TD42? I thought there were a few imports that were SGL spec, but with the diesel 4.2.

That is a debatable one Cedric - quite a number of .2 PETROL was afterwards converted to 4.2 Diesel. thus the SGL spec stayed but the engine changed.
A F I K only the Petrol 4.2 came as SGL and only limited numbers. In other countries they also had 2.8 Turbodiesel and 3.0 liters - here we only ever had the 4.2 engines petrol and diesel [percentages on import parts and CKD parts and such]
My DREAM vehicle is the SGL Patrol with the M57- 2 BMW engine with 4,8 diffs and running on 5 A/T tyres. but that's only me and my dream

I have personally seen an SGL-D badged car. Think it is Stefaansie's but not sure.

Yeah Peter, I think you are correct. Stefansie's is a SGL 4.2 silvertop diesel. I recall Grant and I having a good look at Stefansies red beauty. I think there was someone else also with the diesel SGL at one of the events, but cannot recall a name off hand.
I don't think (I stand corrected) that they were transplanted with the 4.2 diesel after coming out with a 4.2 petrol. Were they all grey imports maybe? I know Dirks 4.2 ST is a grey import.

GQ's in SA are all a bit of a grey area Cedric. I am not actually sure if Nissan ever imported GQs officially.
I seem to recall that Stefaansie's car is in the same series as mine. It has a VIN plate on the firewall that says "made in South Africa" but the VIN number does not follow Nissan's published system and Nissan SA does not have these numbers on their system. Somebody once told me they were built by McCarthy in Merc's factory. Not sure about the veracity of that. Either way, I have seen quite a number of these. Oom Mack's is one and Jule's old car is another. On these cars, the VIN starts with ADNC350000Y21. I am also convinced some of these were diesels.
If I remember correctly, Dirk's car is not a grey import (in the sense that a grey import is imported by a dealer to be sold), but was actually brought in by Grant's dad for his own use?
Strangely enough, Dirk's car's VIN number IS on Nissan SA's system.
