Those look awesome Peter! Any more details? What where the final weight, coating, cost, etc?

Gareth, I don't do coatings. Everybody wants something different, so I supply rough and dirty at a commensurate discount.

These weigh about 43kg, which is roughly 2/3rds the weight of the older type, and at a current cost of R4k, they cost about 2/3rds of the standard as well.

I also now have a beefed-up (better supported) version of the standard type, and Tijmen has just ordered a modified version of this low-profile type for his dad's car with small steps on.

Hopefully they will end up looking something like this:
Note that these are still glued to the car, the brackets are just there to make that easier and also to support the sliders when you step on them.

Very interesting concept. And more affordable.

So once they are on they are there to stay...

The set in the pictures above were fitted by Tijmen to a friend's car. He elected to install a few riv-nuts as well, but I think that just made the fitting easier, it can't replace the glue.

Jip. Although one can probably remove them by cutting the glue with a wire, but that will most likely damage the paint on the vehicle's sill.

I think there may be some possible options.
I think cold-cure Polyurethane may be the best, but Sikaflex is a good alterntive.
I do think it is important to seal up all the edges, either by using excessive amounts of glue or by applying more after fitting, so as not to create a rust trap.

So I finally got around to making a set for my GQ.

Lowest possible profile, but these are bolted on (to the original side step mounting points) so no permanent vehicle mods. Just added some foam padding tape to the outside edge.
Weight in this guise is 20kg, and I have gained about 2.5" (65mm) clearance at the sill joint and even more at the outer edges.

I prefer the old ones you made, it gives protection to the lower part of the door as well

Malcolm, the old style is stil available on the GU.

Stylistically they don't work on the GQ, and I only ever made one set.

Also, with very hard wheeling they do cause vehicle damage due to the much greater leverage they can apply to the mounting points. And the GQ's doors don't extend outwards nearly as far as the GU doors.

So it's horses for courses. But I am thinking of making up some Aluminium "applique armor" panels to bolt onto the doors. Just a thought at the moment.
