I have Alfin piston and rings which basically squeeze the sleeves tighter the more compression there is. These pistons and rings are made for turbo motors and can handle the 22.7:1 compression ratio as well as the extra boost from the turbo.

I was told that ceramic coating the piston tops is nice to have but not necessary as we dont burn these motors anywhere close to the 750 odd degree celcius that the Aussies pound out of these motors. A good thing to check while the motor is a part is the size of the gudgeon pins, some are 28mm and some are 30 or 32mm ( can't recall exactly ), but the bigger the better, and check for the oil squirters under the pistons.

I believe that the TD42's we got here in SA were some of the "old school" td42, with many stronger parts that were changed when they went to the slightly lighter weighted TD42. In other words not quite the legendary "silver top" TD 42 but a mix of the silver and black top models.....

I drive a twin turbo 350z for my daily commute - THAT is real power!

And it also uses substantally less fuel than the the 4.8 petrol motor, even with me driving it like I stole it :rolling:

Thank you Christo for clearing that up for Mr Ian..... and still Chuck Norris will come out of ICU and kick ass.....hahahaha

Michael, you're spot-on there! Graham reckons the motor looks fine otherwise, so I'm leaning towards a rebuild rather than a transplant.

But you've got me with the above bit - what are real turbo pistons when we speak about diesels? And where do I get me some of those?
Christo, you can maybe start off by looking for Nissan 2.7TD pistons, they are made for turbo engines are very strong. you want to hear people mention "Alfin" as these are the inserts in the pistons that make them strong.

Another thing you might want to ask for is if it has keystone rings as they seal a bit better under boost. Nothing rong with normal typer rings.

Keep in mind not to over spend on pistons, I bought Autopower pistons from Alert which are Alfin pistons with normal rings. They are very well priced and I have used them in many engine rebuilds, but while you are at it, get the right stuff

Ok, Ok I will slide off my soap box and crawl over to my chair in the naughty corner     Hope you come right Cristo
Or you could put the 350 motor into your GQ????

Sugar Honey Ice Tea...... Imagine that !!! How to kill a Ferrari in a Patrol !!!

some simple math::
Patrol'ds 4.2 liter displacement / 6 cyliders = 700 per piston
Terrano's 2.7 liter displacement / 4 cylinders = 675 per piston

Won't the Terrano pistons be too small?

Nope the conrod and crank are slightly different as far as I know..... I have 2.7 pistons in my Patrol. They are identical..... Me thinks the sleeves are also 2.7 diesel. I also think the big end bearings are for a 2.7, but stand corrected on that. I'll check the box when I get home cause i still have 2 sets left ( was cheaper to buy 2 boxes of big end bearings for 2.7 giving me 8 sets than to buy 1 box for the 4.2 giving me a set of 6 ).

Christo,

My advice,

Make the garage owner pay. They all have insurance to cover this sort of thing. The biggest issue would/should be to prove it was their fault.

I once had to pay R50K for a Hilux 2.5 d4d( pump + injectors) that got half a tank of Unleaded from one of my attendants.

Get your insurance involved or Lawyer-up and then get some brand new NISSAN parts!!

Cedric, remember how much you like me? What good buds we are? How cool the Maiden and the Chuck look together?

Now that I've set the tone - how little do you want for those rusty old second-hand bearing of yours?
