Hahaha....oom Mac is reg.....I put the GU's extra 315 Bighorn next to the GQ. It looks like it is bigger than the wheel arch because I took the photo from close by, but it is actually just smaller than the wheel arch.

Here's a short "exhaust view" video of the start and bit of driving in my neighbourhood, over sand on the beach parking lot and on the highway. I did that to see if and when it smokes.

I'll post another video later from inside that will show the shut-off problem.

And here's a clip from the inside. At the 30 second mark I switch it off and then it idles for a few seconds.

I am going out on a limb here, but have you looked at what the VIN plate says as far as country of manufacture is concerned? I suspect this to be a grey import, since as far as I know they were not officially sold here before '94?

Anyway, looks like a sweet van!

I have not had a look but I also think it is a grey import.

Whoooh!!!!

Idling at ±700rpm:

Fuel gauge - seems it is where it should be 10 mins after filling up
Voltmeter - Alternator is working.
Speedometer - Standing still when taking pictures, very responsible
Odometer - Well, normally it should be another 250k km before any major work is due, BUT:
Temp gauge - engine is already warmed up, ten minutes drive from the fuel station...
Oil pressure gauge - IT IS ABOVE 8 Bar, YOU'RE DRIVING AROUND WITH A BOMB WAITING TO EXPLODE!!! :surprised: :woo: :helpsign:

Seriously, investigate what is wrong there! Hopefully a blown fuse or a faulty pressure sensor, but looking at te problems you describe I think there may be some trouble around the corner, the serious type of trouble.

Good luck, at least just about everything is fixable on these machines.

Just did a 400km trip which included 100km's in town, 200km's on the highway, 60km's of gravel and 40km's of dune climbs, sand driving and farm tracks in low range. Average consumption was 8.7km/l.

I'm pretty sure the gauge is faulty, because sometimes it sits very low as well for no apparent reason. I did some searching on aussie forums where there is a lot more these engines and there are many reports of the stock sender and/gauge giving problems. When I asked about it, the responses were to replace it with an aftermarket gauge and sender.

A few updates:

After fiddling with the plugs in the engine bay, the oil pressure gauge is now reading the correct pressures.

I also found that there is a missing bush on the DPC actuator arm which seem to be causing the shut-down problem. Will be making up a bush and test it soon.

It was running a bit hot on the sand over the weekend and I found that the viscous coupling on the fan doesn't work at all. I will be refurbishing that soon as well.

There is a major oil leak from the bell housing, so unfortunately the gearbox will have to come out to get to the rear crank oil seal
