I believe that the first step should be to see if you can avoid the snatch rope. Here i believe a hi-lift jack and some branches would have done the trick.
For a snatch recovery, here is the correct procedure:
1) Do all you can do to make the pull easier (as above)
2) Lay out the ropes, and measure the length.
3) Move the recovery vehicle so that it is 0.7x the length of the rope from the stuck vehicle.
4) Attach the ropes. Snake the snatch rope between the vehicles. Ideally use lanyards (much more effective than sandbags) and add sanbags every 5m. Do not just use one in the middle, you need at least two. Open bonnets where applicable.
5) Measure the distance from the recovery points to the driver's door.
6) Measure from the stuck vehicle the following length: Length of snatch rope x 1.2+length of extenders/bridles+length in point 5, and place an object next to the road.
7) Move bystanders away at least 1.5x total rope length.
8) Drive to object placed in item 6. If the stuck vehicle has not moved, stop right there.
