Nissan Patrol 4x4 (Africa)

@Peter: I'm looking to get a GQ Troll for my old man. I'd really like to go on a few overlanding trips with him while he's still physically able to.

I phoned a few Nissan dealerships to get trade/retail values for these vehicles....and Timstrebla's price is just a bit high for me to be able to pay. I can't pay ~R35-40,000 over book....because it won't be insured for that amount.

1996 GQ TB42 SGL: Trade = R55k and Retail = R69k
1996 GQ TD42: Trade = R53,8k and Retail = R68k *

I hear you, but surely on a policy like Out and About or Toughstuff you can make that up by insuring all the extras at replacemen value?

I didn't do one and haven't seen one.

However mechanically it is very simple. Engine mounts, bell-housing, clutch, starter motor, radiator and exhaust all stay the same. Radiator hoses will need to be made up though.

The big questions come in eith regard to how you want to manage it. If you want to keep the 4.5's EFI, you will need to do a lot of electrical work and fit a computer.
If you want to keep the 4.2's carb, you will not really gain anything, and there is quite a lot of work involved. You will also need to transfer the 4.2's distributor or else you will still need a computer and extra wiring.

I do not see the point in doing this.
The TB42 is a wonderful motor.
There is little merit in the TB45 over the TB42 other than that it is EFI.
Converting your TB42 to EFI and ensuring all the rubber remain good on the old motor is a far better option.
Also, I suspect if you convert the TB42 to EFI (using something like a Spitronix system) and dyno it, you may even make more power than the TB45 with Nissan ECU.
I would only consider going TB45 if the TB42 is broken (as the case was with Peter).
On top of that, if you ever want to turbo to get real power out of it, the TB42 is a better option, with stronger conrods compared to TB45.

Im just looking at some options to keep in the back of my head in case i do need an engine replacement one day...
My tb42 done 451k, and is unopened as far as i can tell from the service records and file with invoices i received with the vehicle.

Was wondering if it would be a straight swap from tb42 to tb45 if you keep the carby.

Other option would probably be to get a backup tb42 engine and rebuild it...

But then on the other hand this one might be good for another 500k who knows...

I bet if you look after it, it will give you a million (looking after it means oil changes).
It is so under-stressed. It just purrs if well set up. The only thing that gets to it is overheating, and only if the pipes go, which need to be replaced after 15-20 years).
If you drive with a madman that will not happen in any event.

Mine had to be opened and head skimmed only because it was neglected by the previous owner (never changed the oil).
Over the past few years I only paid for the annual service. New oil and new filters. That's it. Compare that to the pre-emptive replacements that has to be done on a Disco when it gets to 6 years and older...Then consumption becomes a minor issue...
HAs your carburetor been serviced?

Not sure if the carby been serviced..
Radiator hoses are new.
How often must oil be changed on a high mileage tb42?
Normal oil change interval is 10k...?
