Depending on what you are looking for, the 4.8 will not disappoint!

I still drive a Disco 1 Tdi, had a Disco 3 TDV6 with us on a trip to Kenia and all I can say is that I have not had any on-trip issues with my manual transmission 4.8.
A previous post indicated that the 4.8 revs just above 2000 @ 120 km/h. That was obviosuly an automatic !!! My manual does 3000 @120km/h. Therefore I do not see 5 km/l when towing my offroad caravan on overlanding trips ... but then again I also do not travel @ 120 when on long tar road stretches - the manual is most happy at 130 on the GPS. Couple that to lovely thick & loose Botswana sand (Moremi, Savuti, Linyanti, Kasane etc) loaded with 235 L of fuel, 130 L of water and all food provisions for 10 days (required before we saw civilisation again) and the consumption drops to just over 3 km/l, giving a trip average of about 4,1 km/l if memory serves correctly.

An empty 4.8 on road tyres at 120 km/h returned 6,5 km/l (only on that one trip ... he he he ...), but on average including town driving it returns 4,8 to 5,3 km/l.
The fun bit as G-man points out is seeing the faces of the little upstarts in their Citigolfies and Astras ... lol!

The only hiccup my relatively new (60 000 km) 2007 car has is an irritating habit of pushing warm air through the vents (sometimes). Nothing the aircon cannot fix, but that chows fuel again ... the auto does not suffer from the same ailmant I believe ...

I bought it for its size, the solid front axle and that silky smooth awesome 4.8 straight six engine! The two vertical hinged rear doors also comes in handy when towing the trailer as I can still open the small door to get in the back to open the fridge (other than my children reaching across from inside to get to their cooldinks! Doublecabs cant do that! Works for us! Hope we see you in a Patrol soon!
