Hello Dave, dis soos Oom Mack se:hot air not good.
If I can add to that.Give your engine a better chance from the begining.starting with the best breathing/coolest air.If you use a open airfilter it wil breathe the hot enginebay air.The hot air will not be cooled propely by the intercooler. The indesity of the hot air are useless. That will make the engine suffer and your wallet.
I dont know what the name is for your filter, but if I can name it,It is a open freeflow peace of scrap.
The name for your proper filter are,a donoldson type filter drum.
Cheers

I agree with your advice entirely. So hopefully by next week I'll be getting cool air by way of the snorkel, and in the coming weeks I'll be getting cool, CLEAN air by way of a OEM or donaldson filter.

I do also have a gut feeling that the system I have is
not the correct size for a turbo 4.2 diesel.
I thought this morning that the maiden didn't cough and splutter for the first few seconds after starting. Normally I get a plume of smoke out her rear end...

... I assume that the oil spray on the filter medium is cold and therefore tacky restricting airflow considerably, until the air breaks through or warms up the oil on the filter.... I'll monitor this

when it comes to choosing a filter system that can (& WILL) go off road, it should either be a Donaldson or a Donaldson or a Donaldson or a Donaldson or a Donaldson --- orrrrrrrr K & N [if you can get the right size [volume] piping ]

Pleasure mate.... but ...ummm maybe my blonde hair is showing up again.... will you not need to sort out the airbox prior to fitting the snorkel so the delivery point of the snorlel fits into the airbox housing the filter, or have you got a different idea in mind....

I'll be able to use the carbon box that I was using with the free-flow BMC filter (the one i currently have for the last week and a bit is open K&N filter, which is drawing hot air from engine bay). From OOmpie and Frans' advice, better to still run crap free flow (which at least i did manged to find a larger one) than open filter sucking hot air, specially for diesel engine, and TD42 also likes to get very warm
So between now and friday i must just swap my filter for the one with a box.
Frans on Aussies sites that ZD30 airbox seems quite popular choice, would it be wise running one of these with paper filter, or still better to go bigger?
Dankie
