Re: Insurance..??
Thanks guys
I am currently with Outsurance, and although I have never claimed from them for this car, they have been exceptionally helpfull and professional with my Fiance's car and my home insurance. However what bugs me about them is that firstly it seems quite expensive, and if anything is stolen out of my Patrol I am not covered, because it is only covered if it is under a luggage cover or in the cubby hole, and the Patrol does not have a luggage cover. Funnily enough if you have a bakkie with a canopy with tinted windows then stuff in the back is covered, and I fail to see how this is better than my Patrol which has smash-and-grab on all the windows.
I am currently paying nearly R1200/month with outsurance (this is for private use only, and most of my extras are not yet specified), whereas Cross-country's quote was R976.61/month and Tuffstuff have now quoted me R771.93. Both the above are based on the same risk profile and on a car value of roughly R80k and extras to the value of R140k, and includes occasional business use. So even if tuffstuff charge me a R200/month debit order fee (which they deny by the way) they are still the cheapest option so far.
By the way I specifically asked and both Tuffstuff and Cross-country will cover you for both the Fundi challenge and also for events like the AAWDC inter-club fun days, but not for timed events.
Tuffstuf's cover is however by far the widest. they will cover you all the way to the equator, whereas all the other companies only seem to cover you in SADC countries.
Tuffstuff also seem to cover you for far more eventualities than the other two, and their conditions seem to be much less restrictive than most (for example with Cross Country you will be asked to produce Proof of Payment for your extras or they will not be replaced, which is generally not possible if you bought the vehicle with some of the accessories already fitted). However two concerns I have with Tuffstuff is that in the event of your car being stolen or hi-jacked, if it does not have an approved tracking device fitted you will be liable for a 5% excess, and window/windscreen claims carry a 15% excess, which seems excessive, but Cross Country's are even higher at 10% and 20%.

Re: Insurance..??
Right, so here is my problem/question.
Lobo is mine, and no matter how much I value it, I cannot estimate the value correctly. So insurance is a problem. Firstly, Tuff Stuff won't insure it, cos why it is less than R100 000 (I feel he is worth much more, but that's just me!)
Auto & General can't/won't help me.
Me: "It is a 1981 Datsun Safari."
A&G "Eeeeh, we do not hev that vehicle on our system"
Me: "Check under Nissan Patrol for 1981"
A&G useless idiot on phone: "Eeeeeh, nothing."
Me: "So what are you saying?"
A&G STUPID PERSON: "We can only insure your household content" (I decided to get a quote for everything together)
Me: "So you can not insure my vehicle?"
A&G: "Eeeeh, no."
Me: "Thanks for wasting my time."
So what am I to do? I know oom Mac had Lobo insured at A&G, but how are they not able to insure it anymore??
Any other options?

Re: Insurance..??
Gerrie, het jy outsurance probeer?
I am not sure what Tuffstuff's limit is, but they were/are willing to insure my car, which although more than yours is less than R100k, so perhaps it has got to do with the extras fitted?
Perhaps if you add enough camera gear etc you can get there?

Re: Insurance..??
Gerrie,
I feel your pain. I have gone through the same exercise. My Troll a a Aussie import and nobody can give me a value. Does not appear in the blue book and the people who update the book have no record of my specific model being sold in South Africa.
Just called a buddy of mine who has his own insurance agency and they check on Santam's system - they only vehicle close to yours is a 2.8lt Nissan Safari - 92 model. Their suggestion is for you to get a value at a Nissan Dealer, send it to Santam and then they will look at insuring you. Other option is fire, theft and 3rd party.
Just to test I called Tuff Stuff and asked for a quote on my Troll. Told them it's retail is 85k to 95 k and extras of R 120 K. Lets see what the send me.

Re: Insurance..??
Gerrie,
I am also not an expert. I look at service first and then price second. You are also in the same boat as me. No insurance company has our vehicle loaded on their system, thus they do not have a retail/ trade value. Try and visit a Nissan dealer and see if you can get a quote on the value of you vehicle. With that you can then try all the insurance company's. No guarantees.
For a better explanation call 0861423523- Alf & Seuns Makelaars. Speak to Martin or Elaine.

Re: Insurance..??
Gerrie,
Just called outsurance and I must admit, they where very professional. They have a book value of R 76K and with extras of R 120K they quoted me R 815/month. This includes a rental sedan. Covers trails on weekends, where no remuneration is received.

Is this not an opportunity for an article in Drive out/ Weg rey ????

"Hi Gerrie,
Thank you for your online query regarding the TUFFSTUFF 4x4 insurance product. Unfortunately our minimum sum insured for this product is R 100 000.00. Therefore I will not be able to assist with a quotation on this specialised 4x4 facility. However I will gladly assist you with a quotation on a normal domestic portfolio.
Please advise if you would like me to continue with the quotation on this facility?
Regards"
