Jees! nice truck, i also just love the safari! That looks like a SOA story on 35's am i right? There's another chap up in harties area, i'm on the farm up there for 5 months of the year, i see him all the time, his is a light blue safari with similar set up as far as bar work and general mods, looks as mean as yours mate! sjoe, they just have so much character.

I'm running 33", ja I always smile when I drive it.
The Blue Safari is Ras Vermeulen's bakkie, that Safari is very clean

I spoke to a friend he work for Nissan. More on the Renault bit, and logistical planning etc, but he is in the loop nonetheless. Few interesting points:

The only reason for Patrol being in SA is because it is the flagship of the brand.
Marketing should be rebranded witchcraft.

I still think with more clever marketing Patrols would be more. But a big part of marketing is the preception people has of the vehicle. Marketing a vehicle that has little presence on the roads is pointless. People need to think "there are lots of it, so it must be good" That is why Tata is not getting far even if they advertise halftime in Curry cup matches, and that is why Toyota got far with that silly ad about a boerboel that can talk. If you look at the ad, it only has appeal to a few South Africans but comparing it to international ads it is quite useless.

To sum up I believe it started to go wrong in Japan somewhere in a meeting where they decided "Lets not double the South African containers, rather send to Australia"

Nissan SA decides what to import....not the other way around. Toyota just have better dealer support....and they are reaping the benefits of MASSIVE investment in advertising done in the 70's and 80's....if Nissan had done the same thing with the Patrol we might be seeing a different story on the roads.

Russ, what size tyres did you have on your truck in these pics, 285's?
I know you also run the 235's at one stage, thats why i'm asking...

This was my first set of 285's BFG KM2 . Got 105 000km out of them.

That looks like the right size for a patrol
And you have been, mostly, running the 285's on the 6.5j rims?
How do you convince a tyre fitment centre to fit 285's on 6.5j rims, they tell me that they cant fit 265's on 6.5j rims, nevermind 285's....

Ja, all you do is say "i want these tyres fitted to these rims",.. and dont make a fuss about it, half the time they dont even check.

Johan Tyres fitted mine in Stickland CT, and for him not to say anything is the all round mark of approval. He's considered the Guru of all things tyres.

In the UK many many LR110's etc run 285's on the WOLF rim, which is 6.5j and no issues whatsoever. I've never had an issue and i let my tyres down to 0.8 Bar on occasion when i have to in atlantis dunes and i've never run a bead off the rim.

The Patrol rim looks good with the 285's too, which i originally didnt think it would.

Of course, like i said, i cannot comment on the characteristics of other brands on a 6.5j rim, but my BFG run like a dream.
