Thanks Peter...I may take you up on that offer.... but let me check first....

Oom Mac... tow rope and just a gentle pull ..... from a Hummer.... can you believe it.....ha ha...and she started easily. I thought it was the battery at first, but there was still nothing even after trying the jumper cables. And even shorting the 2 terminals got no reaction out of the old ystermeit.

Does anyone have one 265 16" bridgestone dueller with about 90% tread left, that they are looking to get rid of?

Het Oom n photo van die tread pattern?... is the tread completly different? My spare which I'm using now is a 15" and a dueller H/T on a standard steel rim. So I will have to put the that back as my spare and replace the damaged 16" tyre to keep the 4 all the same.

And guess what.... I found where they other piece of the jack is.... under the rear seats..... I feel really doff.... but we learn through our mistakes... I hope.

Took the starter out last night, solenoid is kicking in and out, so its either brushes or armature.... I hope its only brushes...... eish....the $$$$$ is drying up quick  . I'll find out later today the costs.

Stefan, I haven't had a chance yet to even look at the 2nd battery setup yet.... I'm like a headless chicken here at work at the moment. I am getting the starter motor back today and will fit it tonight. I think over the weekend I'll have a look into it.... maybe with my last cold 2M beer... QQQ

I wanted to start the little writeup on how the rebuild went.... but before I do that, I have some concerns that I need piece of mind on.

1)
Cold start or first start in the mornings is quite difficult. I warm the glow plugs 4-5 times before attempting to start(they are still the old ones, but I cleaned them up due to money constraints after the rebuild. But I'll get new ones shortly) but the Maiden coughs and splutters for about 10 - 15 seconds with a fair amount of white smoke coming out the exhaust. After say 15 seconds all the white smoke is gone and all is clear and idles like a dream. Is this due to the glow plugs? I'm under the impression that once the motor is running the glow plugs are not supposed to be operational. the injector pump and injectors was sent into Bosch, and when the motor was all together and in the Maiden, Bosch set the pump timing, and did a dyno test. Is this normal ( I doubt it cause i never noticed this amount of smoke on the old engine)? could it be the rockers not being set to the correct gap (could be, as my feeler gauge is not in the best condition, so it might be +/-0.05mm out)?

2)
The motor sounds at times more noisy than others. The noise is a direct injection noise, more so when the motor is not labouring. I unfortunately cant recall the motors sound prior to the "big bang", but Its bugging me. Again could this be due to the rocker gap setting being slightly out

3)
When accelerating there is huge amounts of power and revs pick up quick (I haven't taken it over 3000 rpm ....yet) and the motor sounds sweet, but with a lot of black smoke coming out the exhaust. While traveling to Moz, the chap driving behind me in convoy, (who also drives a diesel, but a LR) said that he could see everytime I accelerated as the were plumbs of black smoke coming out the exhaust. I have been keeping an eye on the rearview mirror while driving around and I can't see this as being normal or right. your opinions please. Bosch said let the motor run in then it will improve.... but I'm not convinced. Again could this be the rockers being slightly out? I need to set them again as I'm +/- 200 Km short of 2000Km since the rebuild, and figured that 2000Km was a good figure to do this.

I know I've kind of gone on about the rocker setting, so yes I will do this in about 200Km time but I just wanted opinions on what else could be the cause. The motor used to date about 350ml oil, which I felt was acceptable, due to the new motor and filling all the nooks and crannies in the motor. The temps are beautiful, average driving on a flat road at 120km/h is 380 - 430deg C but under full throttle and 2700 to 3000 rpm on an uphill it climbs to 600 - 630 deg C, with one overtaking maneuver for about 15 - 20 seconds at 653 deg C. but cooled down to 450 straight after passing the truck.

Oh and bythe way....he he he... .... I pulled a Range Rover out in Ponto, buried to his belly.... with my winch...(first time doing a winch recovery).... I feel good ...da da da da da da..... I knew that I would now....da da da da da da da :rolling:

Good day Cedric
The difficult start and white smoke and ruff idle, are the glo-plugs.On a cold enjine its worse. The glow system work up to 50deg water temp. The black smoke are to much feul thou, but your max egt's sound perfect. The reason for the lot of smoke under acc. are to much fuel with no or to littlr boost. The no boost fuel can be set on the pump.(at the top cover, turn it out.)
The valves need to be set after a wile, but is not your problem you think.
Hope this help.
