Re: GEROTEK 17 Nov 2012 FINAL ARRANGEMENTS
Jorrie... regarding the labels on the recovery gear.... Its a difficult one, but should something go wrong and the rope/shackle cause injury to someone or something, I assume there could be a liability issue. Get hold of the manufacturer for rating labels, they should have them on. All lifting straps, cables etc for cranes ( which is the same thing at the end of the day ) MUST by LAW have rating lables on them
BUT
RECOVERY GEAR is only as strong as the weakest point.... and that may not even be your equipment....but the recovery point attached to the vehicle you are trying to recover !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We saw this on Saturday for example. One vehicle needed a basic recovery where thee front wheel slipped into a small ditch while doing a river crossing. The angle was wrong for a rear recovery, and we reverted to a front recovery. The problem is that the recovery points were blocked by the front bull bar. So rated shackles and ropes/straps become the least of your problems. The only way we could do this was to ensure that the rope could be attached to part of the chassis and GENTLY just give a little forward movement while the recovered vehicle did the main work to get the front wheel to grip. This is NOT how a recovery should be done, BUT... due to circumstances it was decided that this was the safest way and extra safety measures were implemented.
In conclusion to this.... by rights we could have walked away from this and said sorry there are risks in this recovery that we are not prepared to take. Nobody want to leave a buddy behind !!!!
There are varied opinions regarding the front recovery points on a Patrol too, but maybe on Saturday we can have a quick chat about it as a group.
I'm looking forward to this weekend !!!!

Re: GEROTEK 17 Nov 2012 FINAL ARRANGEMENTS
Thanks Cedric
I managed to get hold of the published specs for thebeodle and kinetic rope.
The owner of Ropeworld undertook toobtain copoes of the certification for the ropes. However, the actual tags remain a problem.

Re: GEROTEK 17 Nov 2012 FINAL ARRANGEMENTS
Yes Cedric,
I feel as a group/club, each member of the outing must ensure that he is adequately equipped with his own recovery kit. If you get stuck, you should give the recovery crew your kit for the recovery. TX to Christo and Louis for the loan of their kit.
Should anybody need recovery kit please send me a pm and I will endeavour to get you the best price from the manufacturers. The more we can order the better the price.
Suggestions are we get Mr Conan to inspect our vehicles so as to assess where we are and what we need to do to comply. For front recovery, I have used the two high lift jack points on my front bumper as recovery point. I insert a Recovery pin which has a shackle attached in the hole and then lock it in place with a large pin.
