The short answer....I fixed the misfire problem but I rectified so many things that I can't put my finger on which specifically caused the actual misfire fault.
When I bought the patrol I took a calculated risk knowing it had some potentially dodgy aspects, and shortly thereafter I also discovered that it had been submerged at some stage, but working on it now I discovered some serious backyard mechanic botched jobs. So it was kinda good luck that I had this persistent misfire because it got me off my ass to start getting involved mechanically and thus able to discover "hidden" issues and get them sorted

Tinus is a ledgend. :)

Very happy to hear you are sorted Spike.
Tom, if I may ask. What did the chip cost. I'd be very interested in getting my fuel consumption down.
(sorry for the hijack)

No problem, if I remember correctly the chip, installation and dyno run was about R3500. 'Dr'Quincey has been in the game for a long time, and does excellent work.

Ongoing saga finally resolved. New iridium plugs and 6 new coils did not resolve the issue. When the car is cold runs without missing a beat, at operating temp, misfire occured intermittently and sometimes was running on 5 cylinders. Some days, no misfire at all. The reason the car was running smoothly when cold was due to the fact that when the engine is cold, the ecu isolates the inputs from the various sensors until the water temp sensor registers (found this gem on an Aussie webpage). Was able to isolate to either cylinder 3 or 4 (connecters under intake manifold). Decided to sonic clean fuel injectors, some build up but nothing serious enough to cause the mis. Fortunately the tech decided to check the connectors from the harness to the injectors and found one of the wires on the no 3 injector badly corroded.
Connector replaced, the Patrol is performing like a race horse, hope this will assist anyone with a similar problem.
