The range of possibility is anywhere from 4.8km/l (which is what I got toward the end of my petrol engine journey) and somewhere around 7km/l (what Chris Boegman gets from his fuel injected TB on a light and relatively standard car doing long trips only).

With the diesel you can expect 7-8.5km/l.

Note that I have installed a TD42 with turbo fairly recently. The cost of this engine is very high. Expect to pay over R100k for a nicely-rebuilt turbo engine plur radiator, intercooler and so forth.

But for basically the same usage and on the same car (weight, air resistance, tires all the same) my consumption improved from 3.8km/l (carb-fed TB with a probably somewhat worn carb and dizzy) to better than 7km/l. And I have considerably more power.
Let's assume I have to rebuild a TB42: is it cheaper than the TD42? I would prefer my TD42 without any turbos.

I’d steer clear of a modified one like that. Something WILL go wrong.
Get a stock standard one. They’re still out there. Just need to look

PS, I’d love to know who the salesman is who can’t tell the difference between a petrol and diesel!

Thanks for clearing that up for me Graham. I am no mechanic, but it makes perfect sense. Rather go for stock standard.

If someone is aware, or becomes aware of that shape Patrol, please be as kind as to let me know. I am very keen to buy one of those, preferably a stock standard TD42 with reasonable milage. I attach a picture of the one I was considering now. I thought it was looking quite good and I love the color schemes.

I know what the difference between Land Cruiser and Patrol owners are: Patrol owners are nice guys. That's fore-sure.

Keep safe!

Depending on the use you want to put the vehicle to, my advice may be exactly the opposite. For the following reasons:
1) It is now almost impossible to find carb kits.
2) I doubt there are more than a handful of guys left who can re-build a carb properly once worn.
3) The same applies to the distributor.

Fuel injection specialists are a dime a dozen, and some of them really know what they are doing. A well set-up fuel injection system is superior to a carburettor in every way.

If you want it do do trails and the odd longer trip in SA, I would consider the fuel injected car. However, before buying this I would want to test it extensively. I would do things like an oil analysis (costs less than R500 and tells a lot about engine health), get it on a sophisticated exhaust gas analyser on a dynamometer to check air-fuel ratio under no load, light load and heavy load conditions, and make sure it doesn't over-heat, and that the water system doesn't have any signs of rust. Oh, and if possible, take it through a deep ford.

On the other hand, if it is to be used as an overland vehicle, I would look for something else, or at the very least make sure the electronics are very well sealed and I would also carry a spare ECU, already programmed.

Once again, just my opinion.

Hi Peter. Will Decra be able to do the above?

Regards

If you want the vehicle checked out, contact Graham Cummings (pathmaker on the forum) he knows Patrol’s literally inside out and I’m sure will assist.

Only buy from WeBuyCars if you know exactly what you're doing and if the price is very right. In this instance it seems to me like you must walk away from it
