Izak, hand held range differ and is dependent on power, line of sight and if you are inside or outside a vehicle.

When I use the Bosvark it is either outside the vehicle on if inside, with an external mag antenna. The steel cage of vehicle interfere with the signal.

I had a look at the RTS DV-3140UV Vratvark 2.0 http://www.repeater.co.za/product/rts-d ... tvark-2-0/ it looks like a neat and functional unit. If you do want ti use it with an external mag antenna just make sure the antenna is capable to work dual - both VHF and UHF if you intend to use both functions at once, else you will only be able to operate within the external antenna ambit.

Yes. Oetie makes a very good point that I overlooked.

Your external antenna will need to be trimmed to frequency, and for UHF and VHF operation, will also need to be dual band. I believe you get them, but I have never enquired about them. Your local radio shop would be able to assist here.... :rolling:

In short: you cannot have too many radios... :rolling: :rolling:

Compared to the more expensive Zarteks (larger with bigger antennas) the com8 doesn't have the greatest range, but it talks to my dual band VHF / UHF handheld radio.

If the forum prefers UHF, which license free channel and CTCSS code is usually used? We have 8 + 5 channels, and something like 38 ctcss tones so it will help if everyone knows before hand what is used by the forum. I'd even like to add that as a separate channel or channels on my radio, called Patrol 1 etc.

Well I am now the owner of a VHF radio. My first one ever! It’s the little DV2135S. Excellent service from repeater.co.za.

Small enough that I can fit it anywhere in my patrol (also bought the mag antenna).

Can’t wait to transmit my first 10-100!!

What the forum needs is someone who really can be called the radio guy, we have a few guys that help a lot when and were they can but we do not have a specific person that really knows radios and all the technical stuff required...

I know one can get a dedicated frequency for the forum, just don't know how....
