Malcolm, I dont agree on your black smoke statement. Black smoke on a diesel is not quite the same as on a petrol vehicle.
Black smoke on a diesel mearly points to a rich mixture, but the fuel did burn. It helps to have a rich mixture low end to get the vehicle more reaponsive and add some low end power.
More fuel = higher EGT's = more power = more black smoke.
White smoke on a diesel is unburnt fuel
