Right, let's make it 15th July then. I'll discuss possible venues with Tinus.

If you want your radio programmed, please just PM me the make and model number so that I can track the relevant software down before hand.

For those who cannot make it on the above-mentioned date, but will like their radios programmed before river trip, please just arrange with me before hand. I'm in Menlyn most days of the week, although I'll be in Randburg for a week or two sometime in July.

Tijmen, the easiest option would be a UHF / license free radio. There are restrictions on this in terms of the Watts it's allowed to put out, as well as the frequencies you can use, but I believe most forum folk have LFR radios.

VHF is considerably better, but you need a license for this. This can be obtained via ORRA (if you're a member of an accredited offroad club), or via 4x4 community (I'm no longer a member there, so I'm not sure of the process - I believe there is a "sticky" thread under the radio section outlining the process).

I'm unsure if you get "legal" UHF vehicle mount units (their output is considerably above the allowed Wattage for LFR), although you do get "licensed" UHF mount units.

I'd honestly say, the easiest option is probably to buy a Zartec / Bosvark / similar radio with a fixed or mag-mount antenna into the vehicle.

I've updated the first post with details of when. Will update with details of where when we have a definite venue.

It is way cheaper to go handheld route for either VHF or UHF and just doing a permanent installation on the arial. Get handheld speaker mic and you basically have the same setup as a permanent radio with the option to take the radio out when needed and required

Will keep an eye on this thread, if I am around will come round to say hi and meet some in person. I may be in Lagos thought...

Ian, I can then also get those maps from you, or if you can, leave them with Thinus as I am close to him.

Would appreciate the frequencies, can program my radio manually and then I have them.

If you're around, stop by. I'll write the maps to DVD for you. I'll also include a spreadsheet with the frequencies / tones on one of the DVD's.

If you're in Lagos, safe travels. And I'll leave the DVD's with Tinus. :salute: :salute:

It looks like a good affordable option, if used on its own it should work for convoy purposes, with an external antenna it will be even better.
