My Back Bumper Build

Ek sien hier is so paar ouens op die forum wat betrokke is by metaal werk, fabrikasie ens. Vir ons ouens wat nie aldag metaal werk doen nie is dit 'n groot werk, ek stem saam.
Maar dit kan miskien ekstra inkomste bied vir iemand anders.

It is also bolted at the back to the chassis. I welded 2thick blocks of steel to the chassis. Drilled and taped them. So iets been welded. Bolted with the 4 oe bolts and the two 12mm HT bolts at the back. The towbar itself just slides in and out. And is held with 15mm HT bolts behind the bumper.

P.S. is daar niemand op die forum wat belangstel om so paar rand te maak en ekstra bumpers te bou nie?

And suddenly you understand why the aftermarket guys charge what they do for decent rear bumpers. The cost of he steel is nothing but the time and effort and the other kak that goes with it is the problem.

But I must admit doing it yourself must give you a really proud and satisfied feel.

Fanus - Go shoot something, make us all droewors and biltong and you buy the bumper from the profit.

I reckon this is the best looking one out there using the original aluminium centre piece.

Thx Bud ...the idea was to keep the original spare mounting bracket and fit those 33' tyres..Perfect fit

I'm stuck in a bit of a quandry with this...

Having taken off my rear bumper, I'm sort of impressed with the departure angle of the Patrol.

However, I'd sort of like to keep my towbar for two major reasons.

1: I tow with the vehicle regularly.
2: I like the solid bar at the back. Taking the towbar off, one can see the protection plate of the main fuel tank sticking out underneath the standard bumper. Yes, it's got a plate over it, but I sort of feel more comforted with the massive solid bar at the back - both from a rear-impact point of view, as well as a potential "slider" point of view.

I've considered modifying the nuts at the top to make it easier to install / uninstall the towbar (ie: flat bar with the nuts welded into the bar - it means I don't have to spend hours tightening the bolts with two spanners). But not sure if this is going to be feasible.

I've had several chats with Tinus, but still cannot quite see something feasible in terms of including a removable-type towbar in my bumper build. Several options were mentioned - including making use of the pintle point on the back to mount a removable towbar. My understanding of these things, however, is that the bolts used for the pintle recovery hook will require great tensile strength, which would mean shear strength would not necessarily be as high as it should be for carrying load. In other words, I'm not sure how one would safely incorporate that build on the 4.5. And I'm not comfortable with welding things to the chassis.

Alternatively, I was thinking of turning my standard towbar (picture below) into one with a square tube / removable-type towbar. Does anybody have any idea how one can do this without compromising on safety ? Peter - do you have any ideas ?

The final alternative is to take my factory standard towbar to Summit 4x4 and have them build something custom for me using the current towbar as a template...
