As i understand the GL 4 makes the sincros not scratch so if a oil is GL 4 and GL 5 spec i would rather try a 5L of proper GL 4 it might be cheaper than doing the box :oldtimer:

Thanks for the reply Ian. It tends to be pretty irregular when/where it idles. When i drove the vehicle down from GP to kzn, i stopped to top fuel up once or twice to fill the tanks, and it idles around 1000rpm, which surely shouldnt be happening as i had been driving for 4-5 hours on average. Could it be change of altitude?

Thanks very much for the advice. Will go buy a dedicated gl4 oil.

That does not sound correct. It should only idle higher right at start - and only for a brief time.

Alright, so thats off to the clever guys with the big computer to see what might be the issue. The mechy set the idle yesterday and it seemed to get better after that. Will drive around a bit today and see what the story is.

My 4.5 also idle quite high. When starting up in cold weather it goes up to about 1300-1400.
I think normal conditions also close to about 1000. or just under, will have to double check.
My 4.2td idles at about 800. (and can pull off in second gear without me having to touch the accelerator - just love the diesels low down torque.. )

Thats right were she idles! Thanks for the feedback man. Going to give her a service tomorrow. Much cheaper than my xc90 to work on/service. Such a pleasure.

pascalkreuger wrote:Hey Guys! Thanks so much for all the replies.

One another side note. Is it normal for the vehicle to idle around 1000rpm when starting up and sometimes driving? Its got a Dastek Unichip in it, but usually once warm, the rpms drop to the usual 650 rpm. Thanks for all the help again guys!

Pascal - Do a couple of searches on the forum as it has been debated in length. Get rid of that chip on the 4.5 is my :mytwocents: . The idling is normal but after chip removal only goes to 1 100 rpm on a freezing Highveld morning.

I am going to throw a spanner in the works
You might want to look at the pilot bearing on the clutch side
if it starts to pack up the clutch can be in but the gearbox is turning
too fast as it is still connected to the motor , or the clutch is not slowing
the main shaft down enough so the synchros can do its job , I had it befor
if the oil is to thick you battle to get the gears

I filled my gearbox with Castrol 75W and that was the last of my problems and my Patrol is on 267000kms
Juice the Patrol has a brass bush as pilot bearing and not a roller bearing
I broke an engine mounting on the last Moetgatle trip and then torn the air intake pipe which I now have modified and repaired and from then onwards
My Patrol idles at 1280rpm at start up but drops to 750 rpm within 45 seconds like it should.....so maybe you guys with the high idling engines ,make sure that the air intake is not sucking air somewhere
