Clem, I am not sure your idea will work.

If you try to prevent the jack base from slipping by preventing the slider from turning, the jack will probably "sieze up". Remember that the wheel's angle must change relative to the jack as a consequence of the live axle (but independent suspension would do the same). Hope this makes sense?

One used to get a special base-plate intended to assist with breaking the bead on a tire, it had a semi- hooped piece of flat bar welded to the underside. Using this or a couple of tent-peg type spikes driven through the holes in the base may be a better way to prevent the jack from slipping?

I have never used a proper wheel buddy/jack buddy, but have improvised one a number of times. Very usefull!
