Here is my opinion about the oil

The reason why the old 4.2D engine needs new oil every 5,000km is because its basically a oil burner with pre combustion chambers and old school injection system. this means that the diesel get polluted much sooner that the modern diesel injection system. this is also why it will be a waste of money to run these engine on full synthetic oil because you will still have to change the oil every 5,000km

On the never common rail diesel systems you can run full synthetic oil and the engine burns the fuel very efficient and this will prolong the life of the oil.
The Iveco Eurocargo trucks have a oil change interval of 80,000km...... yes that is not a typo 80,000km and that is just because they use very high quality synthetic oil and a very advanced clean running engine.
The Turbo Daily with a 3.0L engine has a oil change interval of 40,000km

If we have to be honest about what problems we encounter on the Patrol diesels, running bearings isn't one of them

Just to add on to what Michael said, when the 4.2 D came out, our diesel was at 3000ppm, then it came down to 500ppm at the end of the nineties I think. 50 ppm was only available about 10 years ago. The more Sulphur in the diesel, the more the oil gets contaminated, and the more frequently the oil needs to change.
I heard a story years ago of an old Golf diesel that was hard to start, when the oil ( that hadn't been changed for a couple of years) was drained, it was like sludge.
I have a Hardbody 3.0 TDI that I have had for 10 years, I only use 50ppm (now 20ppm from Sasol) when I can, the only exception was in Namibia when the last time I went they only had 500 ppm.
I also over service my vehicle ( mainly because I enjoy fiddling) and change the oil every 7500km's , which was the old requirement with the 500ppm diesel.
With the new diesel fuel 15 000km's of normal use should not be any problem. As Michael said, I have also not heard of the 3.0 TDI running bearings, most failures seem to be through overheating when pulling a load up a long hill.
just my 5 cents worth.

The engineers designing the Patrols and all other cars spend a fortune of time and money to get the best fit for what they are designing for. Errors are made but running modifications are immediately released as soon as they show up. I am of the firm believer of not modifying anything unless absolutely necessary or a definite requirement is justified. I have raised, put bigger wheels and mud terrain tyres on my GRX, however besides the looks I do I am not convinced I have added any benefits. But my consumption has gone up a bit, my steering now has a vibration around 110 kmh (tyres and the raise have been blamed). I plan leaving my 3.0 GL just like the engineers designed it, leaving it as standard as possible.

I think the answer is still to have two Trolls.

a) One stock std for the more civilised touring and commuting, and one for playing.
b) The latter can be lifted, perhaps pick up some vibration, use the rock sliders for sliding on rocks etc.
