Re: New Zealanders in SA
Smalles - Firstly - WELCOME to the Forum.
Please bear with the jokers amongst us .. some as bad as I am, and even 1 or 2 worse. But deep down they are good people.
I think you can consider the 3.0 Diesel Patrol as well - [opt for the models later than 2002, as that is when NISSAN tweaked the ECU to Africa conditions and all the hassles prior to that were sorted.
But - come the time, we will be gladly "hundting" with you to find the right Nissan for your Africa Adventure.
Nothing quite completes a picture than a RED Patrol in the bacdrop of Richtersveldt :-)

Re: New Zealanders in SA
Welcome and hope you getting sorted with finding the required Patrol and equipment. Would love to also visit NZ one day (also watching a Rugby game or two). What is the off-roading like in NZ? What other countries did you do similar travelling, like you plan for SA / Africa?

Re: New Zealanders in SA
Hi Guys
W e are really overwhelmed by the reaction and the offers to help us get going. A very big thank you to you all.
Here a quick resume':
The group here will be getting together in the next few weeks and we will then be able to supply more info.
Mike Neil is the offroad, "I can beat any obstacle" guy. He owns a Nissan Patrol with diff locks fore and aft that he uses as a substitute for a tractor, drives a Argo 8x8 to get to the difficult parts of his farm ( lazy bugger) and has had a lot of good offroad experience in OZ.
Dave Mare has a lot of offshore professional fishing experience, lives on boat and is a good guy.
I am the computer geek, done a few atlantic crossings in yachts and know a bit about the African bush.
All the wives have had to put up with our adventures in life and I think have come to grips with the fact that life is not going to be easy with us. Good cooks and great companions.
Our initial plan is to start from JHB to Mozambique, up to Zambia. Malawi, then down to Botswana and then SA.
Once again guys - A big thanks for all the encouragement and help.
We will stay in contact.
Have a good Xmas and all the best for the New Year

Re: New Zealanders in SA
There were some incidents involving Renamo is the vicinity of Gorongosa in central Mozsambique and at Nampula in North Eastern Mozambique as recent as November 2013.
It would be a good idea to ''Google'' Renamo to get a better idea of the risk involved in traveling through Mozambique.
Herewith a couple of links.

The Government seems to act swiftly and the incidents are somewhat isolated.
I hope this does not scare you off from visiting southern Africa.

Re: New Zealanders in SA
For Mozambique, I think it is a matter of being streetwise.
People still go. But going further North n the more remote areas sounds dangerous right now.
Just take someone like Ricster along. They go at least once a year.
Things can change quickly as well.

Re: New Zealanders in SA
Hi Guys ( and Gals!)
To answer a few of the replies:
Nothland rugby is alive and well with a pretty good 7`s side and still occasionally supplying All Black material from here up north.
I am not the right guy for Off-Roading but Mike has done some pretty good trips on the North and on the South Island. We have some awesome beaches with up to 50kms of sand on some coasts.
If any of you come to NZ, I am sure that your welcome here will be a warm one.
Do any of you guys know what the requirements are for a foreign passport holder to purchase and register a vehicle in S.A.?
Regards
Les
