Re: Convert 3l diesel to 4.2 diesel
Sou met graagte en maklik n ZD 30 in Tsessebe sit as hy my "hou' kar was..

Re: Convert 3l diesel to 4.2 diesel
Gents,
4.2 diesels will outlast the 3lt unit but lacks some ooomf. Many people disagree with fitting a turbo, but I would suggest that you try and find the turbo 4,2 diesel from Nissan. If not available get a std 4.2 diesel and take it to SAC. They will fit a low pressure turbo on and you will be very pleased with the results. An intercooler would also assist in upping the power and torque. As Oupa Mac says, an EGT gauge is a must, and you could also look at fitting a bigger radiator, to make sure engine is kept cool.
Mine has been running like this for 300k km plus with no issues (touch wood). Cedric and Christo will also confirm that it gets the Patrol to another level.
In summary, if you can get your hands on a 4.2 diesel go for it.

Re: Convert 3l diesel to 4.2 diesel
Clem,
When the Troll was standard fuel consumption was around 9 to 10.5 lt/100. Today with turbo, 4" lift kit, 33 muddies, roof rack, bull bar and winch and a slightly heavy foot, around 14,2 lt/100. Would never go back.

Re: Convert 3l diesel to 4.2 diesel
I have to agree with Grant here...
There is nothing wrong with the ZD30 motor, you must just nurse it..... the same goes with the TD42 motor. If you don't watch the egt's.... BOTH motors will go bang.... but having said that, both motors will do "Koos se Klim" at Moegatle, the only difference is that the 4.2 motor will idle up that hill at 1100 - 1200rpm ( no turbo boosting at those revs), where as the 3.0 will need a little assistance from the turbo to get up. This makes it a lot faster and ( I know I'm going to get shot down here now ) less under control.
For example when Tabbies or Driko ( previous year) or Greg with the ZD30 climbs "Koos se Klim" they made grown men at the bottom of Koos se Klim squeal and squirm like little boys on their very first date. More wheels lifted into the air as the speed was higher going up. There is an advantage with having cubic inches.
On the rocks again the 4.2 motor I believe out performs both any petrol and small block diesel. I say this for one simple reason, and with NO disrespect to either motor, but the torque on the 4.2 diesel at 1100 rpm is unbelievable. It is just enough to keep the wheels moving, and just not enough to get the wheels spinning excessively, and therefore loosing traction. I am going to use Alex's Lexus Patrol for an example ( cause I know and respect Alex and I know he will not take offence). His "Witblitz" has HUGE amounts of power and torque, but again at higher revs (He will eat me alive on the sand dunes), so climbing up a rocky incline his revs are going to be higher to prevent a stall, but then his motor is going to start hitting power bands and then there spin the wheels, this is a similar scenario with the ZD 30 higher revs to keep the motor moving and then you hit the turbo curve.
In conclusion .... ALL vehicles have their advantages and disadvantages. I took my Iron Maiden on the dunes at Atlantis in the Cape a few years back...... I battled my donkey off, and the petrol heads just ate me for breakfast!!
So what is best?..... what ever will work for you. For me a 4.2 diesel without a turbo would NOT work for me, but with the turbo, and 33" agressive muddies, roof rack, bullbar, and more Peter Connan equipment than I can remember putting on, and a 60L stainless steel water tank permanently fitted underneath, and used as my daily drive.... I wouldn't change it for the world.....ok maybe for another 4.2 Turbo diesel

Re: Convert 3l diesel to 4.2 diesel
Nothing wrong with the zd30 motor ,just change the oil every 5000km and keep the egt below 600 , 4.2 is donkey , i would have had a dop or two
and then only cedric would arrive,
the zd30 runs like a dream on the open road and does well off , tows a offroad trailer well would not swap it , but i have to admit there is a bit to much electronics under the bonnet
and then only cedric would arrive,

Re: Convert 3l diesel to 4.2 diesel

Like Juice says, if looked after the ZD30 motor is strong. Lets face it the Patrol has the aerodynamic properties of a brick, and weighing in close to 3 tons, that 3.0L motor does pretty well.

Re: Convert 3l diesel to 4.2 diesel
If i was in your shoes i would choose one of the following:
1: Find a Nissan Factory TD42 (N/A) motor.
2: Find a Nissan Factory TD42Ti motor - this could be from a 2008 pickup onwards.
3: Find a Toyota 1HDFT(E) motor and Auto box. In my personal opinion this would be my ultimate 4 Wheel Drive.
The 1HDFTE motor is africa proof, puts out 121KW or the 151KW (E) motor. Together with a proven gearbox thats super smooth and reliable.
What a pleasure. Plus, plenty of people who know how to work on them, loads of parts, bla bla bla.
Please dont all shoot at me at once, but if you think about it, its an amazing motor and gearbox to match to a patrol.
