Not sure of the cost, but a fraction of the well known brands I believe.

Problem might come in with the design as I Have a specific idea as how I want mine....

A suggestion is to google drawer systems and see all the ideas people have. One of the main reasons for suggestion the outback system is the build quality and the strength.


Also as it is built very well, I show people how strong it is by opening the drawer and standing inside it. As stated a major consideration for a drawer system is for it to fit snug, optimally use the space available and also not make any noises. Another suggestion would be to ask SWAMBO for her opinion. With out this it gets difficult to justify spending the money .

I opted to replace the rear windows with gull wings as I permanently removed the last row of seats., and my trol is a purpose kitted over landing vehicle.

As for the cargo barrier, I can offer anybody with a GQ pics and dimensions of mine should they want to do the same.

I can not warrant the purchase of a drawer system at the prices asked by said companies, definately not on my budget as well.

The most expensive thing on the system is the slides and as for that the cost for a set R750 @ 180kg, you cant get stronger/heavier, I should be able to build one for under R2,500 as opposed to anything from R7000 upwards.

So I will have to go the DIY route.

I believe the weight of a drawer system needs to be considered, and the well known brands are nice but weigh far too heavy to justify their place in the back of my car. I saw an Aussie forum post where a guy said... why put in a drawer system that weights more than double the weight of the equipment you can fit into it. When overlanding one must weigh up the convenience of an all singing and dancing draw system vs the cost and the precious weight penalty one makes.
A couple weeks back, pretty much on the spur of the moment, I bought a Front Runner draw system. I took it home and then realised immediately it was not suitable due to barn style doors at the back and it weighed so much I could not manage it on my own. Fortunately they were prepared to refund me, and I did buy a roof rack too!

Agree, use aliminium instead od steel save a little bit. for the sides I will use ripstop canvas instead of wood and carpet, and save some more weight there, as for the top thinking of using a metal sheet and cover with rubber, again much lighter than wood.

Might have to add one or two extra support beams but this is still much less than the wood option.

Lot of ideas, when it comes to practical application - will have to wait and see......
