But will high-altitude driving on a diesel engine not in fact richen the mixture? Don't know how advanced the injection system on these vehicles is, but on a simple system like the 4.2, I believe the diesel supply is regulated only by engine speed and throttle position?

I stand corrected too, but I think Peter is correct. Our NON electronic 4.2's, and probably the old 2.8's have one setting. However, with the turbo fitted the injection pump has a compensator which varies the amount of diesel being thrown in when the turbo is boosting.
I have felt my 4.2 battle a bit in the high altitudes of Lesotho when going up a steep incline. One has to monitor the EGT gauge and adjust the right foot to stabilize the EGT temps. I can imagine that without the turbo forcing air into the chambers, it will be a nightmare getting 3 tons up a steep incline at high altitude.

Thanks for comments and advice about mixture - I seem to have had my head on backwards about this. I must admit to not having a very clear idea about diesel fuel control. I guess I am just a natural worrier. The fact is that although only a 2.8, the Patrol has coped with everything I have asked it to do - mountains, rock, sand, river beds, salt marsh, dunes....so I feel it has earned some TLC.
Kagiso, my vehicle does have a turbo and I will try to get some pics up today.
Thanks to everyone.

I guess there are a couple of off-road situations where huge power is an advantage, but myself and for my style of driving, I reckon low gearing beats lots of power 9 1/2 times out of 10...
