Peter - oompie baught some whatsamacallit - you paint it on with a brush - cost R100 per liter at the time - and yes it does work [now .. to FIND that blik to get you the name ..]
BUT - when in Voortrekkers I stopped leaks on our tents with own concoction [CHASE ALL CHILDREN AWAY FOR THIS EXERCISE}
take 3 - 4 candles [normal, cheap, white candles] take 1 litre Turps
Now - put Turps [terpentyn] on heat [stove plate .. the less flame the better [keep fire extinguisher at hand] heat the turps to temp where it melts the candles.
Stir thouroughly -- apply with "kwas" [or brush] in VERTICAL strokes firs layer, then horizontal strokes after layer one is dry
I did that with the old type heavy dyty canvas 6x4 Army tents [jy weet - daai &^*&$^%(*&( goed met die kabels en kettings
