First try shifting while the front hubs are locked, on a straight piece of road you should be able to shift smoothly from 2h to 4h and vice versa at nearly any speed you like , 80km/h without a problem.

however when the hubs are on auto the whole front drive train needs to speed up and this might be causing the stickiness, personally I don't like shifting while moving when the hubs are on auto.

Andries, I reckon that might well make a difference.

My car of course has manual hubs (being a Y60), so they are normally already locked when I try and engage 4x4...

On My sun visor, the original factory instructions indicate that shifting from 2h to 4h and the 4 l should be done while stationary. I have no problems and move easily through the box.
