My turbo-charged 4.2 diesel has a lot of mods (33" tyres, roofrack, suspension lift, bull-bars, etc) and my consumption is just under 17l/100km. This vehicle seldom sees the open road as it spends most of its time on 4x4 tracks and also does a once-a-week commute to the office & back. You will have to work hard to get worse consumption than that with a non-turbo 4.2 under more normal use!

BTW, even though mine is turbo-charged my EGT is quite low (never even gets to 600 degrees C). It all comes down to having it tuned properly, methinks :mytwocents:

Agree with Christo

My GQ has a Safari Turbo and inter cooler. Most of the time I am either on 4x4 trails or towing my Comfort trailer, and I am averaging around 6.5km/lt. The best I can achieve is travelling in the Kruger Park. Their I get up to 10km/lt, but that is with a very leisurely drive and no more than 40 km/hr.

I get around 8-10 km/l unloaded so that should be about right.

My best fuel consumption was from Durban to Harrysmith - loaded - at 6.1 km/l.
You do not have to watch all the engine sensors all the time.

How much oil does it take per service and are the filters cheap and obtainable from a place like Midas?

Oil is cheap.... depending on what oil you want to use. I don't mess around.... I use Caltex Delo 400... so ok its a bit more expensive.
Filters are cheap ( I suppose its all relative though) and easy to get almost anywhere. I find it more difficult to get the standard air filter than all the other filters....
